Discover Tarpon Springs: Florida's Little Greece

Discover Tarpon Springs: Florida's Little Greece

Just a few minutes west of our campground is the historic coastal town of Tarpon Springs. It offers a cultural escape steeped in Greek heritage. Originally settled in the early 1900s by Greek sponge divers drawn to the natural bounty of the Anclote River, this vibrant town now boasts the largest Greek-American community in the U.S.

Located only 4 miles from the Clearwater / Lake Tarpon KOA.

Stroll along the Sponge Docks where the aroma of fresh Greek cuisine mingles with the sounds of bouzouki music, and immerse yourself in the rich traditions that still shape daily life here.

Dive into History: The Sponge Capital of the World
Sponging was the lifeblood of Tarpon Springs. In the late 1800s, sponge harvesters from Cuba, The Bahamas, and Key West would scour the waters of the Gulf using small boats and glass-bottomed buckets. The industry flourished with the arrival of Greek divers and innovative diving technology introduced by John Cocoris, a Greek entrepreneur who helped transform Tarpon Springs into the Sponge Capital of the World.

Today the Anclote River, along the sponge docks of Tarpon Springs, churns with possibilities for boat rides. St. Nicholas Boat Line continues the family tradition, going out daily for half-hour cruises with a demonstration of traditional Tarpon Springs sponge diving.

Visit the Spongeorama Sponge Factory and The Sponge Factory on Dodecanese Boulevard to watch free films that bring the sponge diving legacy to life. Explore the historic Sponge Exchange, originally built in 1908 for sponge storage and auctions. Today, it's a hub for boutique shopping and photo ops—including a replica of a great white shark!

Although a blight in the 1940s nearly ended the sponge industry, it rebounded in the 1980s. Today, Tarpon Springs once again reigns as a global sponge supplier.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Come and visit one of the best tourist attractions in Florida. Enjoy exhibits, boat rides and guided tours, and hands-on animal care experiences.

Located only 17 miles from the Clearwater / Lake Tarpon KOA.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick and injured marine animals, public education, conservation, and research.  Clearwater Marine Aquarium opened in 1972 at its current location on Clearwater beach in a former water treatment plant (the large pools being well-suited for rehabilitation operations). Numerous forms of marine life are permanent residents at the aquarium, all of which have serious injuries that prevent their return to the wild. The aquarium's best-known permanent resident was Winter, a bottle nosed dolphin who was rescued in December 2005 after having her tail caught in a crab trap. Her injuries caused the loss of her tail, and the aquarium fitted her with a prosthetic tail which brought worldwide attention to the facility. With heavy hearts, CMA announced on November 11, 2021, that Winter the Dolphin passed away as animal care experts from around the country worked to treat her. You can still see Winter on film as she starred in the 2011 movie Dolphin Tale and the sequel, Dolphin Tale 2, shot partially on location at the aquarium!

The Chihuly Collection – A Kaleidoscope of Glass Art in Downtown St. Pete

The Chihuly Collection – A Kaleidoscope of Glass Art in Downtown St. Pete

Located only 29 miles from the Clearwater / Lake Tarpon KOA.

Don't miss Dale Chihuly's permanent glass exhibition in downtown St. Petersburg, about 40 minutes from our campground. Step into a world of color, movement, and wonder at The Chihuly Collection, a must-see destination located in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. This permanent exhibition features the awe-inspiring glass art of renowned American artist Dale Chihuly, whose work has captivated audiences around the globe. Chihuly's vibrant installations are much more than decorative pieces—they are dreamlike interpretations of undersea life, abstract natural forms, and delicate explosions of color. From massive suspended sculptures to intricate glass arrangements that mimic floating tumbleweeds or coral reefs, every piece tells a story of artistry, vision, and collaboration. Each sculpture is the result of decades of innovation and teamwork, as Chihuly works with a dedicated studio of glass artists to bring his large-scale concepts to life. The glassblowing process itself is a high-energy, physically demanding craft that blends creativity with technical precision, making each finished work a testament to both human imagination and craftsmanship. Though photos and videos can capture their shimmer and form, only an in-person visit reveals the full scale and emotional impact of Chihuly's creations. Wandering through the gallery, you'll encounter towering sculptures, immersive environments, and luminous displays that change with every shift in light and angle. Whether you're an art lover, a fan of design, or simply looking for a unique and inspiring experience, The Chihuly Collection offers a one-of-a-kind journey through glass and light. Don't miss this dazzling gem on your next visit to St. Pete!

 Tips for Visiting

  • While it might be tempting to skip the short documentary film in the theater so that you can get to Chihuly's gorgeous creations faster - don't do it. The film is an up-close look at Chihuly's life and creative process, and watching it will make the rest of your visit to the museum more meaningful.
  • The Chihuly Collection's gift shop offers one-of-a-kind souvenirs, including, of course, glass sculptures by local artists.
  • Your ticket allows admission to both the Chihuly Collection and the Morean Glass Studio and Hot Shop glass blowing demonstrations (across the street from the Chihuly Collection), which are offered Wednesday through Sunday.
