Virginia City offers some of the most interesting history of any town in Southwest Montana. At one time the most important city in the newly created Territory of Montana, and for a time the Territorial Capital.
Today Virginia City provides a well preserved and accessible glimpse into Montana's gold rush days. Beginning In 1863, a group of six men discovered gold in Alder Creek. Word spread quickly and within weeks, nine mining camps had sprung up along the fourteen miles of the Alder Gulch. The richest and most famous of these camps became Virginia City.
With the establishment of the Montana territory - uniting parts of Idaho, Washington, Dakota, and Nebraska territories under one government - the goal was to manage rapidly growing mining camps and an influx of settlers driven by mining, cattle ranching, railroads, and ongoing conflicts with Native American tribes. In just over 2 years, prospectors extracted the modern-day equivalent of forty billion dollars from Alder gulch, and by 1875 Virginia City had peaked and declined into abandoned buildings, shops and homes. Charles and Sue Bovey began purchasing and restoring many of the buildings during the 1940s, and in 1961 Virginia City was designated a National Historic Landmark.
Today, Virginia City offers modern amenities in an old west atmosphere. Enjoy breakfast and pastries made from scratch at the Star Bakery. Visit some of the 150 National Historic Landmarks contained within Virginia City and nearby Nevada City. Ride the Alder Gulch Short Line (Mini Train) to watch the living history reenactments in Nevada City. Kids and Grown-Ups alike will be delighted by the sweets at Cousins Candy Shop. After a long but wonderful day of exploring Virginia City's rich history, relax at a performance of the Virginia City Players, or grab a drink at the Pioneer Bar or the Bale-of-Hay Saloon.
But wait! There's more! Virginia City also offers some of best outdoor recreation opportunities in Montana. Bring your ATV/OHV, Dirtbike, Jeep, E-bike, Mountain bike, or even just your hiking boots. Right from the campground you can access hundreds of miles of old mining/logging roads and trails. Explore along and across creeks, up and over mountains, to visit various intact historic landmarks tucked away in the wilderness, like the Christenot Gold Mill (1866), or the Axolotl Society Birthplace (1962).
