The Ohio River’s name comes from the Seneca word “Oyo,” which means “great river” in the Iroquois language.

The Ohio River is 981 miles long and flows through six states: Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The Ohio River has 20 locks and dams for navigation and flood control.
