Safe Travels! Your KOA Checkout Day Safety Checklist

Safe Travels! Your KOA Checkout Day Safety Checklist

Whether you've spent the weekend making s'mores by the fire, relaxing at the beach, or just staring at the stars, checkout day at KOA means it's time to pack up and head home. But before you hit the road, a little extra attention to safety can make a big difference. Here's how to leave the campground the KOA way—responsibly and safely.

1. Start Early, Stay Calm

Mornings at the campground can be peaceful, and that’s exactly the vibe you want while packing up. Give yourself plenty of time before your checkout deadline (11 AM) so you're not rushing. A calm pack-up is a safe pack-up.

2. Double-Check Your Site

Before pulling out:

  • Walk your site. Make sure nothing is left behind—gear, trash, or even tent stakes.

  • Inspect your fire pit. Ensure it’s cool and fully extinguished.

  • Close water spigots and check for any personal hoses or connections.

Leaving your site clean and clear isn’t just respectful—it’s also important for the safety of other campers and wildlife.

3. RVers: Safety First

If you're in an RV, do a thorough walkaround before you roll:

  • Secure awnings, steps, and antennas.

  • Check tire pressure and lights.

  • Ensure hoses, cords, and leveling blocks are stowed.

Even seasoned RVers can miss something—so take the time to go through your pre-departure checklist.

4. Watch for People and Pets

Campgrounds are full of early morning activity. Kids might be riding bikes, families are walking dogs, and other guests may be heading to the clubhouse for breakfast. Drive slowly and stay alert—you’re still in campground mode, not freeway mode.

5. Respect the Speed Limit

Like most KOA campgrounds, we have a strict 5 mph speed limit. Keep it slow even on your way out—gravel roads and tight turns can be tricky when you’re towing or driving a big rig.

6. Say Goodbye (and Thank You!)

Before you go, consider stopping by our wonderful Kampstore for snacks to take with you. Or stop by the office to say goodbye to the KOA staff. A quick “thanks” goes a long way, and if you loved your stay, a positive review helps other campers find their way to your favorite KOA.

Final Thought: Your Next Adventure Awaits

Leaving a KOA campground safely sets the tone for your entire trip home. Whether you’re headed to another KOA down the road or back to your own driveway, a little care and preparation go a long way. Safe travels, and we can’t wait to welcome you back!
