🐾 Paws on the Road: RVing with Pets

There’s nothing quite like the freedom of the open road—unless, of course, you’ve got your best four-legged friend riding shotgun. At KOA, we know pets are part of the family, and RVing with your furry co-pilot can be one of the best parts of your camping adventure. Whether you’re rolling with a playful pup or a laid-back kitty, here are our top tips to keep tails wagging and whiskers happy on the road.

Pack Their Pet Travel Kit

Your pet deserves a travel bag as ready-for-adventure as yours! Before you head out, pack a tote with their essentials:

  • Food and water (plus easy-to-clean travel bowls)
  • Leash, harness, and plenty of waste bags
  • A favorite toy, blanket, or something that smells like home
  • Pet-safe wipes and grooming tools
  • Updated ID tags and current vaccination records

KOA Camper Tip: Tuck in a spare collar—you never know when a game of fetch will turn into an epic chase!

Create a Cozy, Secure Space

RV interiors are full of new smells, sights, and motion—exciting for pets, but potentially overwhelming. Help them feel at home on wheels:

  • Use a secured crate or bed to give them a “den” of their own
  • Try a pet seatbelt harness for added safety while driving
  • Block off the driver area to avoid unexpected paws on the pedals

Your RV is their rolling home—give them a corner that feels safe and familiar.

Map Out Pet-Friendly Stops

Wiggles happen. Make sure your road trip includes space for stretch breaks and a little outdoor fun:

  • Pin rest areas or roadside parks with pet zones
  • Research state and national parks with leashed trail access
  • Choose KOA Campgrounds with on-site KampK9® dog parks

Must-Visit Spot: Near Tampa, Fort De Soto Park boasts its own dog beach. Sand, surf, and happy pups? Yes, please!

Be a Good Pet Neighbor

Every KOA campground is unique, but we all share one golden rule: be respectful of your fellow campers—human and animal alike.

  • Always leash your pet and never leave them unattended
  • Scoop the poop—every time!
  • Manage barking and be mindful of quiet hours

Friendly Vibe Tip: Let nearby campers know you’ve got a pet pal—they’ll appreciate the heads-up and might even bring treats!

Beat the Heat, Florida-Style

Warm weather is one of summer’s joys—but for pets, it can be dangerous. Pavement, asphalt, and sand heat up quickly and can burn your pet’s paw pads in seconds. If the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Walk your pet early in the morning or later in the evening, and stick to grass or shaded paths whenever possible. Their paws will thank you!

Keep them cool and comfortable with these quick tips:

  • Never leave pets alone in a non-air-conditioned RV.
  • Run A/C or fans and use window reflectors to block direct sun.
  • Offer fresh water often and walk during cooler morning/evening hours.

Camping is more fun when everyone feels great—fur and all!

Final Woof

At KOA, we believe adventure is better with pets. Our Clearwater/Lake Tarpon campground features convenient pet pens, giving your pets a safe, secure place to stretch, play, and relax while you enjoy your stay. Whether you're setting up camp or unwinding by the fire, your four-legged companions will feel right at home. With a little prep and a lot of love, your pet can be the happiest camper on the block. Because wherever you roam, if your pet’s by your side, you’re already home.

Happy camping, and we’ll see you down the road!
