Hike or Bike the Towpath Trail

Enjoy the fresh air while walking or biking on the towpath trail. The trail is full of history dating back to 1827! The Towpath Trail runs north and south. The northernmost trailhead is Canal Basin Park in downtown Cleveland. The southernmost trailhead is Canal Lands Park in New Philadelphia, Ohio. There are many trailheads to choose from.

  • Canalway miles: 98 miles of Towpath Trail 
  • Number of trailheads: More than 50 Trailheads provide parking and Towpath Trail access starting at Canal Basin Park (North) to Canal Lands Park (South)
  • Trailhead/Towpath care: U.S. National Park Service, County Park districts 
  • Surface: Level, mostly ADA accessible
  • North Cuyahoga County section/Cleveland Metroparks: Paved
  • National Park/Stark County: Level, hard-packed, crushed limestone
  • Tuscarawas County section: Earthen, hard-packed
