CONNECTIVITY, CAMPING & FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Can these the two concepts of camping and connectivity be symbiotic? As technology progresses, the relationship between humans and machines becomes interdependent and approaches symbiosis. Or does it?

Research shows that campers are demanding how to get wifi while camping and traveling and tend to prioritize wifi access at sites above campground stores with food and gear to purchase on-demand. This is only just below a campsite being kid-friendly or not. So the big question is, how to get wifi while camping and traveling?  Forget the view of the mountains, upgraded camping amenities or the amazing sights to behold in this historic area, without internet service, many will find the park lacking for the low connectivity and gap in wifi services we sometimes experience. So, we decided to poke around and see how our area compares with the rest of Montana and whether our recent connectivity issues are a trend, or perhaps brought on by recent weather events.

The vast majority of those living in the Butte-Silver Bow area will have access to cable, which covers 89% of Butte-Silver Bow residents. DSL internet is also an option for many, offering service to 24% of the area. Fiber-optic is less available but still a popular internet option for roughly 1.740% of those living in Butte-Silver Bow. For those who value internet speed as much as cost - like the Butte KOA Journey, Spectrum offers download speeds up to 1,000 Mbps** and upload speeds up to 5 Mbps in Butte-Silver Bow. We have this plan at the Butte park. These download speeds are available to 88% of the area, and are much faster than the average max speeds from all Butte-Silver Bow's providers, 42 Mbps. Within the past two days, however, Spectrum has reported some outages. https://istheservicedown.com/problems/charter-communications/5642934-butte-silver-bow-county-montana-united-states

At 92%, broadband coverage in Butte-Silver Bow is comparable to the rest of Montana - 97%, and comparable to broadband coverage across the U.S. - 95%. On top of our Spectrum account - as a KOA franchisee, the Butte KOA Journey also has a broadband connectivity provider called AccessParks (https://accessparks.com/ ) - another service for "outdoor hospitality, residential, and metro-scale sites providing internet that connects, fast!" AccessParks works in tandem with our local provider Spectrum and touts that they “provide park Wi-Fi that just works, with no excuses; fully managed fiber optic-fed Broadband access, enabling 4,000+ devices to simultaneously stream video.” While I have no doubt that their services keep the office (and reservation database functionality) well-serviced, we do occasionally have some glitches in the technology. Nothing is perfect. Anywhere. With anything. Is it? Remember,  we ARE surrounded by mountains and exist along the Continental Divide at one of the highest altitudes within Montana. The weather is sometimes erratic. Ok - it is often erratic! Recently, high winds, hail and unseasonably cold, rainy (and snowy) weather damaged some of the equipment that assures our onsite residents - including Management team, WorkKampers and nightly guests, have the high speed, consistency and stable connections folks seek.

Right now our biggest challenge to the combined services is eroded or damaged poles and equipment and a backlogged service management team. Both Spectrum - our local provider,  and AccessParks - our broadband technology provider, continue to work on solutions to our sometimes erratic campground internet capability this unseasonably challenging season (now one day into "summer!"). Sometimes however, Mother Nature just wins and scales back connectivity among us in favor of a quiet, technology-free Big Sky Night without all the bells and whistles of connecting. We understand in this world the inconveniences posed when technology collides with climate change. We will continue to strive to meet technology expectations for the digital world of travelers coming to visit our humble park!

  • We've invested in the technology

  • When we are aware of the problem, we are proactive

  • We let our technology providers know speed, consistency and connectivity are important to us - for our guests and our business
