    Sheppard Air Force Base

    Sheppard Air Force base, located 6 miles from our campground, is a United States Air Force base located five miles (8.0 km) north of the central business district of Wichita Falls, Texas, United States. It is the largest training base and most diversified in Air Education and Training Command.

    The base is named in honor of Texas Senator John Morris Sheppard, a supporter of military preparations before World War II.

    The host unit at Sheppard is the 82d Training Wing (82 TRW), which provides specialized technical training and field training for officers, Airmen and civilians of all branches of the military, other DoD agencies and foreign nationals.

    The 80th Flying Training Wing (80 FTW), also at Sheppard, conducts the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program, a multi-nationally manned and managed flying training program chartered to produce combat pilots for both USAF and NATO. This internationally manned and managed flying training program is the only one in the world.

    Burkburnett Train Depot

    The City of Burkburnett was established in 1907, shortly after a train depot was constructed by Kemp and Kell as part of a railroad extension to get wheat to market in southern Oklahoma.

    Located in the heart of downtown Burkburnett as a symbol of how the town came to be and a reminder of what paved the way. "It gives people, even young kids, the opportunity to see how important people were that have established our community and how the railroad was a part of that, it's part of a continuity of community." Anyone who wants to see the train depot can call or come by for a tour.

    Midwestern State University (also known as MSU Texas), located 18 miles from our campground, is a public university in Wichita Falls, Texas. In 2015, it had over 6,000 students. Midwestern is one of four independent public universities in Texas unaffiliated with a state public university system. It is the state's only public institution focused on the liberal arts.Midwestern State University is organized into seven colleges with 16 undergraduate programs offering 43 majors and 30 minors, and 9 graduate programs offering 28 majors and 15 minors.
    MSU is the only university in Texas with membership in the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges and was the first public university in Texas to establish a core curriculum.

    Midwestern State fields 13 intercollegiate NCAA Division II athletic teams. MSU is a member of the Lone Star Conference (LSC). The school mascot is the mustang.

    The city's original falls (the namesake of the city) washed away in a flood in the 1800's. '
    In 1987 a new falls was constructed upstream (located 15 miles from our campground). The present 54-foot man-made waterfall is a multi-level cascade on the south bank of the Wichita River. The Falls can be seen by southbound motorists on I-44 as they cross the bridge over the river.
    The Falls provides many wonderful photo opportunities, and it is also the site of many outdoor weddings each year. Parking areas are available just inside Lucy Park on Sunset Drive that have access to the concrete trail. It is about a 1 mile walk to the Falls and back. You can also park along the service road which circles under the I-44 bridge over the Wichita River. The Falls Trail map shows how to access the parking areas.

    Fort Sill (located 43 miles from our campground) is a United States Army post north of Lawton, Oklahoma, about 85 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. It covers almost 94,000 acres (38,000 ha).[2]The fort was first built during the Indian Wars.=10.8333px It is designated as a National Historic Landmark and serves as home of the United States Army Field Artillery School as well as the Marine Corps' site for Field Artillery MOS school, United States Army Air Defense Artillery School, the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade, and the 75th Field Artillery Brigade. Fort Sill is also one of the four locations for Army Basic Combat Training. It has played a significant role in every major American conflict since 1869.

    Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

    Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

    Established in 1901,Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (located 53 miles from our campground) is one of more than 556 refuges throughout the United States managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The 59,020 acre refuge hosts a rare piece of the past - a remnant mixed grass prairie, an island where the natural grasslands escaped destruction because the rocks underfoot defeated the plow.

    The refuge provides habitat for large native grazing animals such as American bison, Rocky Mountain elk, and white-tailed deer. Texas longhorn cattle also share the refuge rangelands as a cultural and historical legacy species. More than 50 mammal, 240 bird, 64 reptile and amphibian, 36 fish, and 806 plant species thrive on this important refuge.

    While you're in the area be sure to check out the Meers Store and Restaurant (http://www.meersstore.com/) on the north side of the refuge for a Bison or Longhorn Burger!

    If you prefer history to art then a trip to the Kell House Museum (located 15 miles from our campground) is not to be missed.Built in 1896, the house belonged to one of the founding fathers of the Wichita Falls area, Frank Kell, and is a prime heritage site that is now a museum.The house is much as it was during the time of the Kell family and you can see period artifacts, antique furniture, and even costumes that date from days gone by and will let you imagine a different world in the house.There is also information about the cultural and historical significance of the house and the wider area general.If you are interested in how Wichita Falls developed, then this is also part of the heritage tour here and is a great stop if you love history.
