The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Matanuska Glacier from Palmer

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Matanuska Glacier from Palmer

One of the most breathtaking and accessible glaciers in all of Alaska is just a scenic drive away from our campground. Matanuska Glacier, a massive 27-mile-long river of ancient ice, offers a unique opportunity to walk directly on a glacier and witness its brilliant blue hues up close. It’s an unforgettable highlight of any Alaskan adventure. As your basecamp in the Mat-Su Valley, the Palmer / Anchorage North KOA is the perfect place to start and end your icy expedition.

Why Visit Matanuska Glacier?

Unlike many Alaskan glaciers that are only visible from a boat or plane, you can drive right to the Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site and walk to its terminal face. For a truly immersive experience, a guided tour allows you to safely explore ice caves, crevasses, and towering seracs. It’s a hands-on geology lesson and a photographer's dream, offering a tangible connection to the Ice Age.

Getting There from Palmer / Anchorage North KOA

The drive from our campground to the glacier access point is one of Alaska’s most scenic routes.

  • Distance: Approximately 50 miles
  • Drive Time: About 1 hour
  • Directions: Simply head east on the Glenn Highway (AK-1). The turn-off for glacier access is well-marked near Mile 102. The entire drive follows the Matanuska River, offering stunning mountain and valley views.

Guided vs. Self-Guided Tours: What's Right for You?

  • Self-Guided (Access to the Edge): You can drive to the private land owned by Matanuska Glacier Adventures, pay an access fee, and walk on a marked trail to the edge of the glacier. This is great for getting a feel for the ice and taking photos of the terminal face.
  • Guided Tours (Walking on the Glacier): To safely venture out onto the ice, a guided tour is highly recommended and often required. Local outfitters provide helmets, crampons (spikes for your boots), and expert knowledge of the ever-changing ice formations. They can lead you to stunning blue ice pools and temporary ice caves that are unsafe to find on your own.

What to Wear & Bring

Even on a sunny day, the ice reflects the cold. Dress in layers!

  • Sturdy Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots are essential.
  • Layers: A base layer, a fleece or mid-layer, and a waterproof/windproof jacket.
  • Accessories: Sunglasses are a must due to the glare. A warm hat and gloves are also recommended.
  • Essentials: Bring water, snacks, and your camera.
