When people think of winterizing an RV, they often picture the upper Midwest or the Rocky Mountains—not Mississippi. After all, we’re known for mild winters, piney woods, and more warm days than cold. But every year, we see the same surprise: frozen pipes, cracked fittings, and costly repairs from RVs that weren’t prepared for just a few cold nights.
Even in Mississippi, winterizing matters.
Cold Snaps Are Short—but They’re Real
Our winters aren’t long, but they can be sharp. Temperatures in east Mississippi regularly dip into the 20s and occasionally the teens. It doesn’t take days of freezing weather to cause damage—just one overnight freeze can crack a water line, split a fitting, or ruin a pump.
Because these cold snaps often come and go quickly, they’re easy to underestimate. Unfortunately, plumbing doesn’t care how short the freeze was.
RVs Are More Vulnerable Than Houses
Unlike homes, RV plumbing is often routed through thin walls, underbelly compartments, or exterior bays with minimal insulation. Even RVs labeled “four-season” can have exposed sections that freeze faster than you’d expect.
Add in wind, shaded campsites, or a sudden temperature drop after a warm day, and you have the perfect recipe for frozen lines.
Damage Isn’t Always Obvious Right Away
One of the most frustrating things about freeze damage is that you may not notice it immediately. A small crack in a fitting might not leak until you reconnect water weeks later. By then, water can be inside walls, under flooring, or soaking insulation—turning a small issue into a major repair.
Winterizing is cheap insurance against a very expensive surprise.
What “Winterizing” Really Means in the South
Winterizing in Mississippi doesn’t always mean a full deep-freeze prep for months on end. Depending on how and when you camp, it may simply mean:
Even part-time winterizing can dramatically reduce your risk.
