River Street is lined with restaurants, many with outdoor decks overlooking the Manistee River channel and the famous 1.5-mile Riverwalk. Try Bluefish Kitchen + Bar for creative Northwestern Michigan cuisine and fresh local whitefish, or TJ's Pub in the historic Ramsdell Building for a hearty meal and a Michigan craft beer. After dinner, take a slow stroll along the Riverwalk, one of the most charming evening walks in all of Northwest Michigan.
Tip: The North Pierhead Lighthouse at the Lake Michigan entrance to the Manistee River is a short walk from downtown, a gorgeous spot for an evening photo.
First Night Campfire
Back at camp, light your first campfire. There's nothing like that first evening fire to signal that the vacation has officially started. S'mores, good conversation, and a Michigan sky full of stars.

Lake Michigan Beach Day
Morning Sunrise at the Lake
Drive five miles to Lake Michigan and find your spot on the beach for sunrise. Manistee County has 25 miles of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline, and early morning is the best time to have it almost entirely to yourselves. Pack a camp coffee and watch the sun come up over the dunes. There are few better ways to start a morning anywhere in Michigan.
Tip: Pierport Beach, just a few miles from Bear Lake, is a beautiful and quieter alternative to busier Lake Michigan access points. Worth finding.
Midday Full Beach Day
Stay at the lake. This is a beach day, don't rush it. Swim, build sandcastles, kayak the shoreline, read a book, or simply sit and let the waves do what Lake Michigan waves do best. The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness area, about 30 miles southwest, offers 4 miles of completely wild, undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline and spectacular dune landscapes for those who want to explore further.
Evening Casual Dinner & Back to Camp
Pick up dinner from a local spot on the way back from the beach. The Lakeside Cafe near Bear Lake earns consistently strong reviews from weekend visitors, a relaxed, friendly spot perfect for an easy Sunday evening meal. Return to camp, rinse off, and enjoy another campfire. You've earned it.

M-22 Scenic Drive & Arcadia Dunes
Morning Pick Up M-22 & Head North
After a camp breakfast, head north and pick up the legendary M-22 Scenic Highway, one of the most celebrated scenic drives in the United States. The 116-mile route winds along the Lake Michigan shoreline through charming villages, towering dunes, and jaw-dropping overlooks. Start in Onekama, the 'Two Lake Town' where both Portage Lake and Lake Michigan come into view, and follow the road north at whatever pace suits you.
Tip: Pack snacks and water for the drive. You'll want to pull off frequently, and you won't always find services at the best spots.
Mid-morning Inspiration Point at Arcadia Dunes
Don't miss the pull-off at Arcadia Dunes; Inspiration Point is one of the most breathtaking viewpoints on the entire M-22 route. A sweeping, unobstructed Lake Michigan overlook from the top of the dunes with almost no infrastructure. Just you and the view. Plan at least 20-30 minutes here. Photography in any direction is genuinely effortless.
Afternoon Frankfort & Betsie River Area
Continue north on M-22 to the charming village of Frankfort on Betsie Lake. Browse the shops and galleries on Main Street, grab lunch at a local cafe, and walk the Frankfort Lighthouse pier for views of both Betsie Lake and Lake Michigan. The drive between Upper and Lower Herring Lake, two of the prettiest inland lakes visible directly from the road, is a highlight just north of Frankfort.
Evening Return South & Dinner
Wind your way back south along M-22 as the light turns golden over Lake Michigan. Stop at Ketch 22 near Frankfort for waterfront dining before returning to camp, consistently praised by visitors for its relaxed atmosphere and great lake views. Back to camp for the campfire ritual.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Set aside a full day for the crown jewel of Northwest Michigan, and one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the entire country. Voted the 'Most Beautiful Place in America' by Good Morning America, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore deserves every superlative it receives.
Morning Drive to Sleeping Bear Dunes via M-22
Continue north on M-22 through Empire to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The park features towering sand dunes, crystal-clear Lake Michigan beaches, and some of the most dramatic overlooks in the Midwest. Stop at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire to pick up a trail map and get oriented before diving in.
Tip: A National Park pass is required for access to trailheads and beaches: America the Beautiful pass is $80/year or $35/week. Well worth it.
Midday The Dune Climb & Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
Tackle the famous Dune Climb, a challenging, exhilarating scramble up the face of a massive Lake Michigan sand dune with incredible views from the top. Then take the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a 7.4-mile loop through the park with multiple overlooks offering sweeping views of the dunes, Glen Lake, and Lake Michigan. Every pullout is worth stopping for. Grab lunch in the village of Empire, a charming small town with local cafes right at the heart of the park.
Tip: Bring plenty of water and sunscreen for the Dune Climb; it's significantly more intense than it looks, especially in warm weather. The sand is deep, and the sun is unrelenting.
Afternoon Glen Arbor, Glen Lake & Leland's Fishtown
Continue north through the beautiful village of Glen Arbor on the shore of Glen Lake, one of Michigan's clearest inland lakes. Browse the boutiques and grab an ice cream before heading to Leland and its famous Fishtown: a row of weathered cedar fishing shanties along the Leland River that have been in commercial operation since the early 1900s. Pick up smoked whitefish straight from the source; it's a Northwest Michigan tradition.
Tip: Fishtown's smoked fish is genuinely exceptional and makes a perfect easy dinner back at camp. Pick up enough for the evening.
Evening Return to Camp
It's been a big day. Head back to Bear Lake / Manistee KOA Holiday, eat your Fishtown smoked fish by the campfire, and let the sounds of the Northwest Michigan night wind you down. You've seen some of the most beautiful country in America today.

Rivers, Trails & Manistee National Forest
Morning Paddle the Manistee River
With 270 miles of pristine paddling rivers within easy reach, a morning on the water is a must, and the Manistee River is the crown jewel. A beautiful, relatively calm river ideal for canoes and kayaks, it flows through towering hardwood forests with abundant wildlife, crystal-clear water, and a pace that forces you to slow down. Several local outfitters offer rentals and shuttle services, so you don't have to worry about logistics. If you prefer a shorter, mellower paddle, the Betsie River to the north is equally beautiful and excellent for beginners.
Tip: The Hodenpyl Dam area on the Manistee River forms a gorgeous reservoir near Wellston. The trail and footbridge along the dam leads to a hidden waterfall, a worthwhile detour for adventurous paddlers.
Afternoon Manistee National Forest & Big M Trail
The Manistee National Forest covers over 540,000 acres right in Bear Lake's backyard, one of the largest national forests in the Midwest. The Big M Trail system offers more than 18 miles of trails across four segments with varying difficulty levels, perfect for mountain biking or an afternoon hike. Alternatively, take the River Road National Scenic Byway through the forest for a stunning car-based tour through the heart of the region. Keep an eye out for deer, eagles, and osprey along the river corridor.
Tip: Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the National Forest's many scenic river access points. This is one of the most peaceful places you'll find anywhere in Michigan.
Evening Iron Fish Distillery
Cap the evening with a stop at Iron Fish Distillery near Thompsonville, a beloved Northwest Michigan institution known for handcrafted spirits and its legendary bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup. The tasting room and outdoor gathering space make it a genuinely memorable experience. It's become a regional rite of passage, and the maple syrup alone is worth the trip. About 30 minutes from camp.

Manistee Deep Dive: History, Culture & Local Flavor
You've explored the natural side of Northwest Michigan all week. Today is for soaking up the history, culture, and local character of Manistee, one of Michigan's most underrated small cities.
Morning Manistee Riverwalk & North Pier
Start your morning with a walk along Manistee's 1.5-mile Riverwalk, one of the finest waterfront promenades in Northwest Michigan. The restored Victorian-era brick buildings, galleries, and boutiques along River Street tell the story of Manistee's remarkable history as a Great Lakes port city. Walk to the North Pierhead Lighthouse at the Lake Michigan entry to the Manistee River for a spectacular morning view of the open lake. On a clear day, the horizon seems endless.
Midday S.S. City of Milwaukee & Lunch
Tour the S.S. City of Milwaukee, a 77-year-old Great Lakes railroad car ferry permanently moored in Manistee and now a National Historic Landmark. The tour guides are remarkably knowledgeable and bring the history of Great Lakes shipping dramatically to life. It's the last unaltered example of a Great Lakes railroad car ferry in existence. Afterward, head to The Golden Stag or Birch & Maple for lunch; both have earned strong local reputations for quality food and friendly service.
Tip: The S.S. City of Milwaukee transforms into a 'Ghost Ship' during October for the Halloween season, a uniquely Northwest Michigan experience if you happen to be visiting in the fall.
Afternoon Ramsdell Theatre & Downtown Exploration
Spend your afternoon exploring downtown Manistee at a leisurely pace. Visit the historic Ramsdell Theatre, a stunning 1903 landmark at the corner of First and Maple that has hosted plays, concerts, and performances for over 120 years. Check their schedule for any evening performances during your stay. Browse the galleries and antique shops along River Street, and don't miss Port City Smokehouse for a final smoked fish haul to take home.
Tip: The Ramsdell Theatre is worth visiting just for the architecture, even if you don't catch a show. One of the most beautiful historic buildings in Northwest Michigan.
Evening Farewell Dinner in Manistee
For your penultimate evening, treat yourself to a proper dinner out. The Windward Restaurant on the 5th floor of the Manistee Hampton Inn offers sweeping views of Manistee Lake and Lake Michigan, one of the most scenic dining rooms in the region. Alternatively, Bluefish Kitchen + Bar has been consistently praised for its blackened whitefish, champagne chicken, and genuine Northwest Michigan warmth. Either way, you've earned a great meal.
One Last Morning & The Long Way Home
Morning Final Sunrise at Lake Michigan
You know the drill by now. Drive the five miles to the Lake Michigan shoreline one last time and watch the sunrise. After a week of Northwest Michigan mornings, you'll understand why people keep coming back. Bring coffee. Take your time. This one's for you.
Midday Check Out & Final Breakfast in Bear Lake
Check out of Bear Lake / Manistee KOA Holiday and stop in downtown Bear Lake or Manistee for one final breakfast before the drive home. The Blue Heron Cafe & Bakery is a local favorite, known for creative sandwiches, fresh soups, house-baked goods, and the kind of friendly service that makes small-town Northwest Michigan genuinely special. Pick up something to take home: smoked fish from Port City Smokehouse, maple syrup from Iron Fish, or a bottle of wine from one of the Leelanau Peninsula wineries you may have discovered along the way.
Tip: The drive home is a good time to start planning your next trip. You'll want to come back — and now you know exactly what to do with your time.
Afternoon Head Home
Hit the road with a full week of Northwest Michigan memories, a camera full of photos, and the deeply satisfying feeling of a trip done properly. Seven nights. Two of them on us. See you next time.
