Meet Your Hosts

Open All Year

With Hwy 12 now open, KOA guests are again enjoying Cape Hatteras Camping. Choose a full hookup RV site near the beach or a luxury lodge at discount rates during the winter season. Amenities are being restored but our full service cafe is open for your convenience. So come see us today, or in 2012 when we'll have an all new and exciting look.

For endless unspoiled sand and surf, head for this oceanfront KOA on the Outer Banks. It’s just a few steps from your campsite over the dunes and right to the Atlantic. Walk the beach for miles, hunting for shells, casting for bluefish and scouring the surface for dolphins that often cavort on by. Or head across this sliver of an island it’s just a quarter-mile wide, to Pamlico Sound, where windsurfers and kiteboarders scoot off toward the horizon.

There's also a full roster of summer activities at the campground - everything from pool games to basketball tournaments, craft activities like bead jewelry making, live skits and live music provided by the Summershiners. Finish with a dip in either of two pools and grab a bite at the poolside snack bar.

Our Big Bouncer is a great hit with the entire family. Enjoy a family-oriented film under the stars at our Outdoor Cinema. Grab your sleeping bag and some change and hit the snack bar. The KOA Fun Train chugs through the campground daily, with your conductor pointing out campground highlights and local attractions. Fun here is as limitless as the sand.

Enjoy the comforts of home in our all new lodges that sleep up to 6 people! Fires are allowed at your campsite in a fire stand only. We have fire stands that we rent ($10/night) or, if you have one, please feel free to bring it.

Tom Rocco, the General Manager of the Cape Hatteras KOA Campground, is thrilled to be managing this KOA for a number of reasons. "As an avid camper and RVer, I've always had an interest in learning the camping business from an operator's perspective. Managing KOA properties has been an invaluable learning experience," says Tom. He also loves the fantastic location, which is the perfect setting for his love of water sports, biking and camping.

His business style matches that of KOA to the tee. "GREAT customer service is the cornerstone of the KOA trademark. Promoting this philosophy is simple if you follow one rule: treat every guest as you expect to be treated. Having curb appeal, great amenities, clean restrooms, and planned activities are all essential, but a friendly empathetic staff is what guests will remember and take home," says Tom.

Tom's understanding of people and business comes from leading a lively existence. "My career history resembles a jigsaw puzzle! After obtaining degrees in psychology, journalism and criminal justice, I pursued a career in tennis. First playing college then semi-professional tennis I decided to teach/coach tennis as a career. Injuries and age eventually forced my first career change into the criminal justice system as "Court Liaison". Fifteen years later another career jump guided me into resort/facility management.

Tom's ability to attract people seems to extend to wildlife as well. "While RVing in the Ocala National Forest, we had a late night visit from a black bear that stood against the RV, peering into the window, then rocking the whole RV.

It seems that campers, staff members and even bears like spending time with Tom!

Here at the Cape Hatteras KOA, our recreation team has discovered the cure for spring fever: planning summer camping getaways! It's actually part of our job to create a fun experience for our campers-a task we don't take lightly. Whether you're peeling out on banana bikes, or unwinding in our pool, boredom is not an option.

Pancake Breakfast At our pancake breakfasts we serve up a scrumptious stack of pancakes hot off the griddle. We round out the meal with sausage links, coffee and orange juice. You eat up; we'll clean up!($)

Top Your Own Sundae I scream, you scream, we all scream for sundaes! We serve up your favorite toppings such as chocolate syrup and whipped cream, and a chance to mingle with your fellow campers.

We really did build the "World's Largest S'More"

On June 19, 1999 over 200 KOA campers and local Girl Scouts toasted 9,300 Jet-Puffed marshmallows, unwrapped 4,000 Nestle chocolate bars and 300 pounds of Honey Maid graham crackers in an attempt to create a new world’s record for the Guinness Book of Records. The monster munchie weighed in at 788 pounds and measured 10 feet wide by 40 feet long taking just over five hours to complete. This historic event was a big hit for families as they made their own individual s’mores all day long while cheering on the creation of the largest s’more ever made. It truly was a sight to see and we encourage you to check our events calendar for more exciting activities at the campground. Don’t miss out on all the fun!
