You know that you've struck gold when you discover the Placerville KOA!

You know that you've struck gold when you discover the Placerville KOA! Located in the glorious Sierra foothills between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe, it's a terrific launching pad for trips to California's Gold Country. Visit the Marshall Gold Discovery Park and pan for the shiny stuff yourself. The campground store even sells panning equipment. A vast array of day-trip options include Sacramento, wineries, apple ranches, and whitewater rafting on the American River. This campground is also located less than one mile from the new Red Hawk Casino where you can enjoy gambling, entertainment, kid's quest, cyber quest arcade, and dining! Also, enjoy free shuttles daily at any time of your request. After a busy day, return to KOA and relax in the pool or adults can enjoy our hot tub when it's open on select weekends. Kids will love the goats in the petting zoo, rental bikes, horseshoes, mini golf, fishing, as well as the recently built playground. Some weekends in the summer feature family karaoke with Elvis, family competitions, and delicious Sunday morning pancake breakfasts. Come see us - we're six miles west of Placerville on Highway 50.

It took a lot of work and a hard fight for John and Cindy Simoneau to open their Placerville KOA, but John says it was worth it.

In 1987 the couple planned to build their campground on beautiful spot in the middle of pastureland. Before they could begin, national no-growth groups converged on them, and the Simoneaus found themselves in the middle of litigation that went all the way to the State Appeals Court.

Years later they were able to build their beautiful campground and have a place for each member of their family on staff. Their son is the assistant manager while their daughter is a key part of the staff. Even John and Cindy's grandson, Quest, is growing up on the campground. "I had an electronics business that wasn't very family oriented and we wanted to do a business that had something for the kids," John said.

The park is growing and the Simoneaus have their hands full keeping it clean. "Cindy is a clean freak," John said. "Our bathrooms are 14 years old and spotless."

John said the couple is particularly proud of the setting of their campground-right in the foothills between the Sacramento Valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Their customer service philosophies involve serving their customers in the best way while keeping the environment preserved. In their free time, John said they like to play with their grandson and have fun.

"The main thing is to have fun," he said.
