Meet Your Hosts

After 26 years of trying to get rid of pesky little bugs, the Schaffer family now welcomes them.

For four years, Travis Schaffer ran his family's pest control business, owned by his parents, Logan and Darlene Schaffer. He grew up in the business but said the whole family was ready to try something with a different pace and personality than ridding the world of bugs. They sold their business and went into campgrounds.

"We were hooked on the idea of campgrounds," Travis said. "We have always been an adventurous family, the outdoors type. We feel like we have a connection to the customer base. It is a natural fit." Bugs are a welcome part of their campground ownership, and Travis's young son is especially excited about the critter possibilities. "He thinks it is the coolest thing, catching lizards and frogs," Travis said.

Having his son around the campground in a family-oriented atmosphere was a huge draw for Travis. "In most businesses you can't bring you're son to work for the summer, it would be considered unprofessional," he said. "But camper's find that family work ethic appealing."

His customer service philosophy involves getting into the mind of the camper and seeing things from their perspective. "I talk a lot to customers and find out what they are thinking. I take simple polls," Travis said. "I am trying to find out what the overall trend is and what are the got-to-have services."

"In the end it is always top priority to give the camper the experience they are asking for."

Cumberland Island National Seashore Photo

Cumberland Island National Seashore

The Cumberland Island National Seashore is the largest and southernmost barrier island in Georgia, offering guests over 17 miles of secluded white, sandy beaches. Wild horses and other island wildlife roam freely throughout the ruins and along the beach. Glimpses of the Carnegie lifestyle can be easily imagined throughout the ruins of Dungeness, abandoned luxury vehicles, Plum Orchard, and Greyfield Inn.

The island is a complex ecological system of interdependent animal and plant communities. A system of foredunes protects the interdune meadow and shrub thickets. A canopy of live oak trees stretches out beyond the back dunes that provide protection from the salt spray. For more information, you can go to The Cumberland Island National Seashore website .

Orange Hall Photo

Orange Hall

Sitting gracefully on Osborne Street is found the architectural pearl of historic St. Marys, Georgia. The home takes its name Orange Hall from the "extensive hedges and the large sour orange grove at the rear of the house." This is a showcase of antebellum life in the Greek Revival style, with massive fluted columns below classic, yet simple, Doric capitals and triangular pediment. Its spacious rooms and wide hallways, and its garden's tree hedges all contribute to a simple frontier elegance. The architecture is, too, labeled a Doric prostyle temple. Its main floor is above the ground-level floor, the latter used primarily for food preparation, servant areas, and storage.

February - Mardi Gras Festival Photo

February - Mardi Gras Festival

Held every year on the Saturday before Ash Wed. (In 2012 this is Feb. the 18th.) Children’s rock wall climbing and baby strollers will be just as much a part of the St. Marys Mardi Gras festival as are the iconic beads and masks. Presented by the St. Marys Downtown Merchants Association, the 16th Annual Mardi Gras Festival and Parade will showcase decorated floats and dazzling costumes designed around this year’s theme “Romance Through the Ages.” Festival organizers said that the festival has always been family-oriented, contrary to its more famous counterpart in New Orleans. “St. Marys is a family kind of town,” said Roger Rillo, President the St. Marys Downtown Merchants Association. “We’ve orchestrated a parade and festival that will appeal to all ages making sure there are plenty of activities for the younger set.”

A 10 a.m. parade will launch the festival followed by a full day of entertainment, arts and crafts, and amusements, all lining the St. Marys waterfront and the main street that runs through the historic district.

When the sun goes down and the lights come up, adults will continue the celebration at the Mardi Gras Ball where a new King and Queen are chosen each year. Prizes will be awarded for costumes that best depict the “Romance” theme, and dance music will be provided by one of the region’s most sought after bands, A Touch of Grey.

9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Street festival with amusements that include the world’s tallest inflatable slide, bungee jumping, a climbing wall, a trackless train, and numerous arts and crafts displays.
10 a.m. Parade with lots of floats, costumes, and bead throwing
12 noon All-day entertainment begins at waterfront stage
7 p.m. Mardi Gras Costume Ball at J’s Restaurant & British Pub
Tickets for the ball are available at the St. Marys Welcome Center and Once Upon a Bookseller in Downtown St. Marys. Beads are also available at the bookstore on days leading up to the festival.
