Choosing the Best RV Site Type for Your Needs

June 6, 2025

Several different RV Site types are available for your camping adventures and excursions, and choosing the right one can set you up for a fantastic vacation. From power connections and sewer hookups to special amenities, understanding RV Site types helps you choose the perfect one for your next vacation. When you stay at Kampgrounds of America, you can reserve clean, level RV Sites with various features and amenities.

What Types of Standard KOA RV Site Types Are Available?

KOA offers the following standard RV Site options to meet your needs:

Full-Hookup Sites

A full hookup lets you connect your RV directly to electricity, water and sewer. This is an excellent way to experience the great outdoors with all of the basic conveniences of home.

A water hookup makes it easy to cook and bathe without leaving your site, and you can dispose of your gray and black water through a sewer hookup without having to dump your tank. You can choose between 30-amp or 50-amp electric service based on your RV’s power requirements.

Water/Electric Hookups

Water/electric hookups are partial hookups with water and electricity. This option is perfect for pop-up campers and smaller RVs. You can reserve a site with 30- or 50-amp electric.

Dry Hookups

A dry hookup features a power source for your RV but no water or sewer connection. You can choose this option and use KOA’s clean and convenient bathrooms for warm showers and fresh water.

In addition to a range of RV hookup types, RV campsites also come in a number of styles:

Back-In RV Sites

Back-In Sites feature a 60-degree or 90-degree slant, providing a wide clearance for you to back your rig up. Once you have backed into your site, you can enjoy 30- or 50-amp electric service. Often, you can also take advantage of a fire ring and a picnic table.

This option is popular for being price-friendly and offering extra privacy. Back-In Sites often include sewer hookups as well, but you can choose a full or partial hookup based on your needs.

Pull-Thru RV Sites

A Pull-Thru RV Site is extra convenient because it lets you pull directly into your site, removing the need to back up and maneuver your rig when you arrive. Pull-Thru Sites are available in various sizes and typically come with 30- or 50-amp electric service, a sewer hookup, a picnic table and a fire ring.

Do I Need a Pull-Thru RV Site?

Consider the following factors when choosing between a Pull-Thru and Back-In Site:

  • RV Size: Pull-Thru Sites are better suited for large RVs because they feature a straightforward entry and exit. If you have an RV that is 25 feet or longer, a Pull-Thru Site offers a smoother parking and setup process. If you have a smaller RV, a Back-In Site’s wide clearance should offer plenty of room to position your RV.
  • Comfort level with backing up: How comfortable are you maneuvering and backing up your RV? A Back-In Site is excellent if you feel confident in this area, but a Pull-Thru Site is ideal if you are less comfortable backing up.
  • Privacy: Back-In Sites are a little more private than Pull-Thru Sites because they typically face away from other campsites and the main road. Consider how close you want to be to other campers before choosing a site.

What Is a KOA Patio®?

A family enjoys the campfire at their RV Site with KOA Patio.

A site with a KOA Patio® is a Back-In or Pull-Thru Site with a 250-square-foot or larger hard surface patio. It includes patio-style furniture, two furnished seating areas, a BBQ and a fire feature. Sites with a KOA Patio® also feature the standard RV amenities such as 30- or 50-amp electric service and a sewer hookup.

Should I Get a Site With a KOA Patio®?

All KOA RV Sites offer a relaxing place to enjoy the great outdoors, but a KOA Patio® adds an extra touch. Reserve a site with a KOA Patio® to enjoy the following advantages:

  • An enhanced outdoor experience: A KOA Patio® enhances your camping experience, giving you an extra-comfortable space to enjoy the outdoors and make memories with loved ones.
  • Extra convenience: An RV Site With a KOA Patio® is a convenient area to brew your morning coffee, grill some delicious burgers or relax with friends and family without leaving your campsite.

What Is a Signature Site at KOA?

KOA Signature Sites offer the standard RV Site amenities plus special features to make your stay extra fun and relaxing. The following features make a KOA Signature Site a fantastic option for your next adventure:

  • A minimum 3,000-square-foot site size
  • Privacy-screening landscaping
  • Extra parking space
  • A spacious group gathering area with a covered and lit pavilion
  • Additional amenities and recreation on-site
  • A KOA Patio®
  • Full hookups

Does KOA Have Pet-Friendly Sites?

If you want to know which site type to reserve when camping with a dog, you’re in luck. KOA welcomes you and your four-legged friends to enjoy the great outdoors together.

You have the following options if you bring your fun-loving dog along on your adventures.

Standard Pet-Friendly Sites at Every KOA Location

KOA locations across North America have pet-friendly sites, and each campground has its own rules and amenities regarding canine campers.

Before booking a site, call your desired KOA location to check what their restrictions are and what they offer for dogs. Every campground allows pets, but only at certain sites. Let KOA know you are traveling with a furry friend before booking your site.

KOA Paw Pen Sites at Select Locations

A Paw Pen Site is the best camping site for pets because it features a private fenced-in area. These sites can be Back-In or Pull-Thru RV Sites, and they provide 50 square feet or more for four-legged friends to run leash-free while supervised. A Paw Pen Site makes it easier to camp with your dog because you do not need to keep them tethered at all times.

For convenience and your dog’s comfort, each Paw Pen Site includes a gate, a waste receptacle, a doggie bag dispenser, and a shade structure or tree. Paw Pen Sites also include the standard 30- or 50-amp electric service and sewer hookup. Some Paw Pen Site fences contain the entire site, allowing your pet ample space to hang out with you leash-free.

KampK9® at Select Locations

Select KOA locations feature KampK9, which is a special pet playground where your dog can run and play with other canine campers. Each KampK9 playground has ample space for dogs to run free and special equipment for them to play on.

Which RV Site Type Is Right for Me?

Now that you know which KOA RV Site options are available, you can pick the perfect option for your next camping vacation. Consider the following factors to choose the right site for you.

RV Size and Site Compatibility

If you are not sure what size your RV is, the following methods can help:

  • Owner’s manual: Check your owner’s manual for your RV’s dimensions. They are typically listed under “Technical Data” or “Specifications.”
  • Manufacturer’s website: If you cannot find the RV’s measurements in your owner’s manual, check the manufacturer’s website.
  • Tape measure: You can also use a tape measure to determine your RV’s length, width and height. Measure from the hitch, kingpin or front bumper to the rear bumper for the length. It is also helpful to take a measurement with the towing vehicle because this can affect how easy it is to park your RV. To determine the width, measure the RV’s widest point, including awnings, slide-outs and mirrors. When you measure the height, measure from the ground to your RV’s highest point.

When you fill out a reservation form, KOA recommends compatible site types based on your RV’s length. This makes it easy to reserve a site that will adequately accommodate your RV.

Views

Consider what type of view you want to have from your RV. All KOA locations are in beautiful areas across North America, but certain site types offer extra-fantastic views. Reserve a KOA Signature Site to enjoy extra greenery around your site and soak in the beauty of nature.

Plans and Activities

What are your vacation plans? If relaxing around the campfire with your loved ones is your top priority, a KOA Patio® or KOA Signature Site is the best way to kick back. However, you might prefer a more basic RV Site if you plan to explore area attractions and spend less time at your campsite.

If your next camping adventure involves a group, consider reserving a KOA Signature Site. Your friends and family can gather in a beautiful pavilion and take advantage of the extra parking space. A KOA Signature Site makes it easy to camp with your favorite people or invite new camping friends over for a meal.

How to Choose an RV Route

How you reach a campground is just as important as choosing the right type of RV Site. An RV’s height and size can make it incompatible with certain routes due to factors like bridges, tunnels and narrow roads. It is also helpful to give yourself breaks from driving if your destination is a long distance from your starting point. Here are some tips to help you reach your destination safely and easily.

Plan Your Route in Advance

Use online tools like Google Maps to view your route ahead of time, and check if it includes any potentially challenging roads. Once you enter your starting point and destination, you can click on the “Layers” icon on the map and use the “Satellite” or “Terrain” option to view the types of roads on your chosen path. Google Maps presents all potential routes, so you can choose an alternative option if necessary.

Use an RV-Specific GPS

RV GPS systems are designed specifically for RV-safe routing. It takes your RV’s height and weight into account, helping you avoid potential hazards such as narrow roads, steep grades and low bridges.

Plan Breaks Along the Way With the 3-3-3 Rule

Man enters a camper van at night.

Driving shorter distances and stopping at campgrounds along the way helps you save energy and enjoy your trip if you need to cross multiple states. Use the 3-3-3 rule for RV travel to plan a balanced, relaxing trip:

  • Limit your driving to 300 miles or less per day: Limiting your driving helps prevent fatigue so you can have a more relaxed, enjoyable travel experience.
  • Reach each destination by 3 p.m.: Arriving at a campground in the early or mid-afternoon gives you plenty of time to park your RV, set up your site and enjoy your surroundings without rushing.
  • Stay at each location for three or more days: Staying at a destination for three or more days gives you time to explore the surrounding area and rest before hitting the road again.

RV Parking Tips

Whether you choose a Pull-Thru or Back-In Site, understanding how to maneuver your RV is essential. The sooner you park and set your site up, the faster you can start your relaxation and adventures. Parking your RV is a breeze with the following tips:

  • Use caution and approach your site slowly: Take your time when parking an RV. There is no need to rush, and a slow and steady approach is the best way to park perfectly on your first try.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings: Use your rearview and side mirrors to ensure adequate space before backing into a site. It’s also important to look in all directions when approaching a Pull-Thru Site. Ensure all neighboring campers, children and dogs are at a safe distance before pulling into your spot, and keep your children and pets inside your vehicle until you are parked. You can step outside and check your surroundings before parking if you need to.
  • Use the correct angle: Driving in the right direction according to the campground’s road signs ensures a smooth parking experience. Sites are angled to optimize ease of maneuvering and help you avoid sharp turns.
  • Use a spotter: Ask a family member or a friendly staff member to stand by and help you avoid obstacles.

When Do I Need to Use Leveling Blocks for My RV?

Leveling blocks are essential when you park your RV on sloped or uneven terrain. Camping on a level surface removes the need for leveling blocks because they provide the stability your RV needs. KOA’s RV Sites are fully level, making your setup process easier with one less step to complete.
