Visiting The Oregon Coast

Camping along the Oregon coast is an ocean-lovers dream. The numerous towns, beaches, attractions and sites along the entire coast offer something perfect for everyone! Tent or RV camping along the Oregon coast is a fun experience that allows you to get close to the action and natural beauty of the area. Or choose to stay in a cabin accommodation for another fun way to experience this region. Campers can choose a campground as a base and explore from there, or travel from one end of the coast to the other while stopping to stay and camp along the way. KOA has five campgrounds along the length of the Oregon coast and each one offers unique features and amenities that complement their respective locations.

Experiencing The Oregon Coast

From the northern coast to the southern coast, there are great KOA locations where you can camp and so many things to see and do near every campground! The northern Oregon coast begins in Astoria, where the 4-mile-long Astoria-Megler Bridge connects Oregon to Point Ellice, Washington, across the mouth of the Columbia River. In this area, you can visit the Astoria Column, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, the Fort Clatsop National Memorial and Fort Stevens Historic Area. Don’t miss the popular shipwreck of the Peter Iredale. If you're a movie fan, check out the Oregon Film Museum to learn about film-making and the movies that have been filmed in Oregon. The Astoria/Warrenton/Seaside KOA Resort is a comfortable place to stay while exploring this area. Travel further south and explore the city of Seaside, where you can stroll along the promenade and visit the Seaside Aquarium. As you continue down the coast, don’t miss the beautiful views from Ecola State Park and Cannon Beach where the iconic Haystack rock stands sentry over the beach.

Travel along the coast and check out the scenery in Oswald West State Park, Rockaway Beach and the Cape Meares Lighthouse and State Scenic Viewpoint. Cheese fans must stop at the Tillamook Creamery for self-guided tours and cheese samples. Make sure to enjoy some delicious Tillamook ice cream before you leave! A bit further south, you will go through Pacific City and Lincoln City where you’ll find the Lincoln City KOA Journey near freshwater Devil’s Lake. There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy both at this KOA, and along the waterways and beaches in this area. Have some fun flying a kite or searching for agates along a beach here. Continue on to Depoe Bay, the “Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast,” where it is common to look out on the ocean to see whales spouting water, courtesy of the resident whale pod.

As you move down the coast, make a stop at Devil’s Punchbowl or check out Beverly Beach State Park where you can examine shell fossils in the rocks at the south end of the park. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Outstanding Natural Area is a beautiful area to explore and offers fantastic tide pools at low tide. Continue on to the Newport area where you must visit the Newport Historic Bayfront. You will be entertained by the sea lions lounging on the docks and can even go crabbing from the public fishing pier. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is also a great stop in Newport. While exploring from your campground, Oregon State Parks and beaches dot the coastline so you are never far from ocean access. Further south is the Waldport/Newport KOA, which is located right over Alsea Bay with beautiful views of the Alsea Bay Bridge as well as the Pacific Ocean from the campground. Tillicum Beach and Yachats are to the south.

Thor's Well and the Neptune State Scenic Viewpoint are two of the numerous amazing views as you move down the coast. Heceta Head Lighthouse and state scenic viewpoint is a favorite area to visit. You can also stop to visit The Sea Lion Caves attraction along the way. Further south you will reach the city of Florence on the Siuslaw River. As you travel down the Oregon Coast Highway you will pass some lakes, including Woahink Lake and Siltcoos Lake. Don't miss the Umpqua River Lighthouse by Winchester Bay. Further south you will find the Oregon Dunes KOA Holiday with ATV and ORV access to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area just two miles from the campground. This unique and exciting campground has recreational vehicles traveling to and from the sand dunes. You can join in the fun by renting your own ATV or ORV near the campground and trying out this activity yourself!

The last southern stretch of the Oregon coast takes you down past North Bend and Coos Bay. Make a stop at Shore Acres State Park in Coos Bay to see a beautiful garden and ocean views as well as Cape Arago State Park and Lighthouse. Soon, you come to the Bandon/Port Orford KOA Journey, a campground nestled within a forest that really feels enchanted. Park your RV at this Oregon Coast RV Park, or stay in a camping cabin or in one of the thirty tent camping sites. Near the KOA you can make a visit to Cape Blanco State Park and Lighthouse, the most western point of Oregon state. There are miles of beaches and state parks to explore along the coast as you continue south and reach the California border.

FAQs For Camping in The Oregon Coast

When traveling to the Oregon Coast, the best time to visit depends on what you're looking for during your trip. If you want to go hiking, biking, camping, fishing, and boating, the best time to visit is during the summer. These are the warmest and driest months of the year so you'll be able to enjoy endless outdoor adventures.

If you're looking to relax, or enjoy some cold weather sports, then the best time to visit s November through January. During this time, the crowds have dispersed and you'll be able to experience skiing and snowboarding.

Between stunning scenic areas, natural wonders, and rich historical sites, there are so many things to do when visiting the Oregon Coast. The Oregon Coast isn't big chain hotels and piers stuffed with tourists, think more along the lines of small fishing coves, camping lodges, and lighthouses on grassy hills.

One of the most iconic attractions is Haystack Rock. The low tide reveals a colorful world of sea anemones, urchains, and sea starts. There are also several species of seabirds here.

Another popular attraction is the Columbia River Maritime Museum which highlights the human and natural history of the waterway.

Fort Stevens State Park is another one of the top attractions of Astoria. It's a massive natural space with a long military history. Today, the park has accessible hiking trails and the Fort Stevens campground which is the largest on the coast.

Where the land meets the bay and the sea, Oregon Coast opens up an abundance of possibilities. From hiking and ATVing to fishing, crabbing, and clamming, there are endless water and outdoor activities to explore.

A trip to Oregon's Coast isn't complete without a crabbing trip. Some of the best places for crabbing are Lower Coos Bay Crabbing and Charleston Area Crabbing. The Coast is also known for excellent clamming and word-class fishing.

There are also several trails to explore. Grab your hiking boots and check out the Oregon Coast Trail, Golden & Silver Falls State Natural Area, or Bluebill Trail. If you're looking to enjoy the outdoors with pulse-pounding adventure, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is a great place to go ATVing.

The only National Park along the Oregon Coast is Crater Lake National Park. This park is formed by the now-collapsed volcano, Mount Mazama. The Rim Drive is a spectacular scenic drive and there are many outdoor adventures to be had here. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. It's comprised of 183,224 acres of mountains, forests, and lake.

Most of the scenic views, adventurous hikes, and camping locations along the Oregon Coast are at an Oregon Coast State Park. As you drive down the coast, you'll come across numerous different parks to explore. You won't want to miss an opportunity to check out the historical lighthouses along the Oregon Coast Highway.

Some of the top parks are Ecola State Park, Oswald West State Park, Cape Meares Lighthouse and State Scenic Viewpoint, Beverly Beach State Park, Shore Acres State Park, Cape Arago State Park and Lighthouse, and Cape Blanco State Park and Lighthouse.

Nothing beats freshly caught seafood on the Oregon coast. Along the coast, the restaurants, bars, and breweries serve seafood caught off the shorts and produce grown locally. There are so many great restaurants where you can sample fresh seafood or creative comfort food along the coastline. Some of the most popular foods are tillamook cheese, clam and mussel chowder, smoked salmon, and sushi.

Some of the must-try restaurants along the coastline are Bridgewater Bistro, Offshore Grill and Coffee House, Garibaldi Portside Bistro, Pacific Sushi & Grill, Schooner Restaurant and Lounge, Riverhouse Nestucca, Local Ocean Seafoods, and Yachats Brewing.

The Oregon Coast is a magical place filled with amazing views, a unique coastal culture, and a lot of small towns to explore. There is so much to do in this area that you won't get bored. Tent, RV, or cabin camping along the Oregon Coast is a fun way to get outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of the area, especially in the summer months. The Oregon Coast has the perfect climate for camping, and there so so many campsites along the Oregon Coast. Some campgrounds are a bit more rustic while others have every amenity you could dream of. Many of the campgrounds are right on the beach or have easy access, so you won't have to travel to far to touch your toes in the sand.
