Get ready for the third annual fat tire bike race on beautiful Wrightsville Beach! The US Open Fat Bike Championship will consist of a large oval or kidney shaped lap which will take racers from the thick sand to the hard packed sand along the waters edge. Riders have the choice of three levels of competition; beginner (8 miles), sport (16 miles) or expert (24 miles). While all bikes are allowed to race, bikes that are over 4 are recommended. The North Carolina Azalea Festival 5K/10K & 1 mile-Fun Walk is an annual event hosted by the Cape Fear Volunteer Center. Kids, dogs, and costumes are welcome!

All proceeds from this event benefit the Cape Fear Volunteer Center Big Buddy Program. Big Buddy is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches at-risk youth ages 6-16 in New Hanover County and Brunswick County with positive adult role models. Youth are identified as at-risk due to the following circumstances: involvement with the juvenile justice system, excessive in-school and/or out-of-school suspensions, poor academic performance, and lack of positive role models. The Cape Fear Volunteer Center is a 501c3 and works to recruit and train volunteers, match volunteers with youth, offer support and guidance through case management, and provide monthly group activities.

This "point-to-point-to-point-to-point" event begins in Wrightsville Beach and takes athletes along the same fast channel swim. The bike course runs through the coastal countryside outside Wilmington, and the run traverses Greenfield Lake before athletes finish in historic downtown Wilmington across from the USS North Carolina Battleship.
