Glittering trees decorated by local businesses, various organizations and individual artists transform the aquarium space into an enchanted forest for all to enjoy. A New Hanover County tradition since 2005, guests from around the world have visited Airlie Gardens from Thanksgiving to Christmas to take in the sparkling sights and festive sounds of the season. Guests will experience a 0.5m stroll through the Gardens, on a self-guided walking tour while feasting their eyes on a spectacular array of lights and holiday displays. The New Year's Celebration is always held on New Year's Eve and begins at 9 PM. The location rotates between Carolina & Kure Beaches. Don't miss the giant beach ball being dropped at midnight followed by a spectacular fireworks demonstration.

The 15th Annual Dolphin Dip Extravaganza in Surf City, NC, benefits Ocean Cure, which helps at-risk and physically challenged youth achieve healing through surfing. The event features thousands of folks braving the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, plus a costume contest, and more.

Fort Fisher State Historic Site and Battlefield in Kure Beach and the Friends of Fort Fisher host the 152nd Anniversary of the 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher. The weekend features hundreds of reenactors representing Union and Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines realistically depicting everything from camp life to battle strategies.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day has special resonance to Wilmingtonians because (among other reasons) Dr. King was scheduled to travel to Wilmington for a speaking engagement on the day he was assassinated. Wilmington honors his memory with a week of events dedicated to him and his work ending with Monday's commemorative parade. One of the largest traditional jazz festivals in the Southeast and a STS Top 20 Event, this musical weekend will feature Kevin Bales, Rossano Sportiello, Nate Najar, Chuck Redd, Jim Fryer, Dion Tucker, Herman Burney, Randy Reinhart, Jonathan Russell with Music Director Adrian Cunningham. Friday and Saturday nights feature All-Star musicians in the traditional seven sets of six or seven players, each with a different leader. The third anual Race 13.1 Wilmington half marathon, 10k and 5k event returns on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017! The event will once again start and finish at Lumina Station, the "shopping village by the beach" with a route that features the citys beautiful Cross City Trail as well as the University of North Carolina Wilmingtons campus. With an average high of around 60 degrees in February, Wilmington is an ideal place to enjoy the coasts natural beauty and spend time with family and friends and a great destination for a weekend getaway!
Get ready for the third annual fat tire bike race on beautiful Wrightsville Beach! The US Open Fat Bike Championship will consist of a large oval or kidney shaped lap which will take racers from the thick sand to the hard packed sand along the waters edge. Riders have the choice of three levels of competition; beginner (8 miles), sport (16 miles) or expert (24 miles). While all bikes are allowed to race, bikes that are over 4 are recommended. The North Carolina Azalea Festival 5K/10K & 1 mile-Fun Walk is an annual event hosted by the Cape Fear Volunteer Center. Kids, dogs, and costumes are welcome!
All proceeds from this event benefit the Cape Fear Volunteer Center Big Buddy Program. Big Buddy is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches at-risk youth ages 6-16 in New Hanover County and Brunswick County with positive adult role models. Youth are identified as at-risk due to the following circumstances: involvement with the juvenile justice system, excessive in-school and/or out-of-school suspensions, poor academic performance, and lack of positive role models. The Cape Fear Volunteer Center is a 501c3 and works to recruit and train volunteers, match volunteers with youth, offer support and guidance through case management, and provide monthly group activities.
