This race is a highly-anticipated USA Triathlon sanctioned event and consists of a 1350 yard swim, an 11.5 mile bike and a 5k run in Wrightsville Beach to test your abilities. Currently drawing nearly a quarter-million people, this free, family-oriented celebration is a two-day event and has grown to be a widely anticipated annual celebration. Riverfest was created in February 1979, by a group of Wilmingtonians interested in showcasing downtown Wilmington and the Cape Fear river and has since resulted in a cultural street festival that entices locals and tourists alike to our amazing Historic Downtown.
This USTAF Boston qualifier marathon takes a tour of Carolina Beach and the adjoining town of Kure Beach. Both the half marathon and 5K are flat courses and all races end at the beautiful Carolina Beach Lake Park. Medals will be awarded to all finishers of the Marathon and Half Marathon and long sleeve shirts will be given for all races (sizes only guaranteed to those registering prior to 10/1/17).

The PPD IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina triathlon will take place on much of the same course as its bigger sibling and will feature a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. This "point-to-point-to-point-to-point" event begins in Wrightsville Beach and takes athletes along the same fast channel swim. The bike course runs through the coastal countryside outside Wilmington, and the run traverses Greenfield Lake before athletes finish in historic downtown Wilmington across from the USS North Carolina Battleship.

The Port City Rib Fest is a celebration of great BBQ, cool music and zany fun. It features champion pitmasters from around the country. They cook on a summer circuit and have been at their trade for a long time. Along with the succulent BBQ offerings, a multitude of side items, desserts and drink options are available. The first Port City Rib Fest was held in August of 2013, adjacent to the USS North Carolina battleship, on the shores of the Cape Fear River. Over 17,000 attendees braved the hottest weekend of the year to partake in the festivities.

Voted a Southeast Tourism Society (STS) Top 20 Event, this celebration kicks off Friday night with the Anchor's Away Launch Party. The event is open to the public and includes dinner, a cash bar, live music and a silent auction. The fun continues Saturday with the Festival in the Park featuring over 100 arts and craft vendors, an antique car show, a large play area for children with several inflatables, the always popular Arab Choo Choo, festival food and more. The 16th Annual Dolphin Dip Extravaganza in Surf City, NC, benefits Ocean Cure, which helps at-risk and physically challenged youth achieve healing through surfing. The event features thousands of folks braving the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, plus a costume contest, and more.

Fort Fisher State Historic Site and Battlefield in Kure Beach and the Friends of Fort Fisher host the 153rd Anniversary of the 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher. The weekend features hundreds of reenactors representing Union and Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines realistically depicting everything from camp life to battle strategies.

The North Carolina Azalea Festival “Loop The Lake” Extended 5K/10K/1 Mile Fun Walk is an annual event hosted by the Cape Fear Volunteer Center. Kids, dogs, and costumes are welcome!All proceeds from this event benefit the Cape Fear Volunteer Center Big Buddy Program. Big Buddy is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches “at-risk” youth ages 6-16 in New Hanover County and Brunswick County with positive adult role models. Youth are identified as “at-risk” due to the following circumstances: involvement with the juvenile justice system, excessive in-school and/or out-of-school suspensions, poor academic performance, and lack of positive role models. The Cape Fear Volunteer Center is a 501c3 and works to recruit and train volunteers, match volunteers with youth, offer support and guidance through case management, and provide monthly group activities.
April 18-22, 2018The 2018 West Marine Carolina Cup presented by SurfTech kicks off the race season with 5 courses: a kids race, the Harbor Island Recreational “fun” race, Money Island open race, 6 man outrigger race on Sunday and the renowned Graveyard Elite Race. This is our seventh year. In 2012, the Carolina Cup was the largest race on the East Coast with over 400 paddlers competing in the first day of races. In 2013, we had over 600. In 2014, there were over 700. The 2015 event was one of the most competitive events on record and also deemed the largest SUP event in the world.
