Total Solar Eclipse, April 8, 2024

The 2024 season started out with a total black out of the sun... hidden by some clouds.  Michael and I were excited to open the campground early this year as the brand new Sodus Point Lake Ontario KOA.  We thought it would be nice to welcome a few astrologically minded travelers to see the Total Solar Eclipse from the bluffs of Lake Ontario, not realizing that we would be totally full, thanks to our local news coming out to let Rochester know we were open for business (Thank you Wendy Mills!).

Spectrum News Story on Sodus Point Lake Ontario KOA

It was very scary opening the campground with all new systems, new staff and new guests who didn't know what to expect.  But what a GREAT WEEKEND!  Gloria, Leah & Aaron (KOA Staff Stars!) were great, and our customers were so extremely patient as we learned in real time.

I can't say enough about the phenomenal guests that we were blessed with for our opening weekend.  The weather was perfect for the eclipse, one day too early and again one day too late :(.  We ended up with total cloud cover for the eclipse day itself, but everyone was in top notch moods anyway.

As the sky darkened quickly, it felt like someone was switching off the lights, and the best way to describe the campground was... giddy.  Everyone started giggling and squealing with excitement as it got dark.  What I didn't expect at all was the ring of light that you could see across Lake Ontario in Canada, where they were not experiencing totality.

Before the event, I have to say I wasn't sure it could possibly live up to the expectations.  Afterwards though, you can bet I will be among this fun group of intrepid travelers, following the eclipses as they come.  What a beautiful event to share with you all.  Thank you so much.
