Meet Your Hosts

The Bergerons have been hosting camping families at the Gettysburg/Battlefield KOA since 1991. Before that, Emile Bergeron had been a financial manager for an automobile company in New Hampshire, and wife Linda had been a mail carrier.

Their son, John, and his wife Lorelle are also part of the Gettysburg/Battlefield KOA family. But the real boss is John and Lorelle's daughter, Simone. If you stay at this KOA long enough, you're sure to see her in her bright yellow KOA shirt.

The Bergerons have taken their diamond-in-the-rough campground and turned it into one of the gems in the KOA Kampgrounds system. They were recognized in 2003 as the Franchisee of the Year among more than 480 KOA Kampgrounds in North America.

Emile, Linda, John, Lorelle and Simone all have their camper's interests at heart. That's why you'll see John busy flipping pancakes for your breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning. And if you don't feel like cooking dinner, just stop at the store, place an order and have your meal delivered right to your to your campsite.

Now that's service!

Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center

Gettysburg has always been a "must see" for every American. With the opening of the new Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park on April 14, 2008, it became a "must do" for those who have visited before as well as those who have yet to come. The 139,000-square-foot Museum and Visitor Center blends the familiar with exciting new programs, exhibits and experiences. Throughout the 11 exhibit galleries, visitors still will encounter some of the popular items from the collection (weaponry and uniforms, for example) along with a great deal more. State-of-the-art galleries will use a greater variety of objects and artifacts from Gettysburg National Military Park’s extensive collection (and from other museums and private collections from around the country) to offer perspective, and a greater appreciation for the sacrifices of those who became a part of the greatest battle ever fought in North America. It is also the home of The Gettysburg Cyclorama painting. Cyclorama, Film and Museum Experience: The film narrated by Morgan Freeman A New Birth of Freedom will orient your group to the Battle of Gettysburg and the American Civil War. After the film, ascend the escalator to see the massive Battle of Gettysburg Cyclorama painting — the largest painting in the country. This original 1884 work of art is larger than a football field and combines with an overhead canopy and three-dimensional diorama to create a Victorian illusion. Be surrounded by the action of Pickett’s Charge on the third day of the battle. And don’t miss the Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War, where the story of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Civil War is told through 12 galleries, including artifacts, interactive exhibits and additional films. Allow one to two hours for the Cyclorama, Film and Museum Experience. This picturesque house was built in 1834 and at the time of the Civil War was owned by the noted statesman Thaddeus Stevens. It was on July 1, 1863 that General Robert E. Lee established his personal headquarters in this old stone house. An ideal location, it was at the center and rear of his battle lines and it was on the same road that many more of his troops were quickly approaching. At the time of the battle, the house was the dwelling place of Mrs. Mary Thompson, who was known by the residents of Gettysburg simply as the "Widow" Thompson. She was not excited about having her house occupied by a "Rebel," but she "…testifies that the gentlemanly deportment of General Lee whilst in her house, but complains bitterly of the robbery and general destruction of her goods by some of his attendants." For more information visit General Lee's Headquarters Museum

Shriver House Museum

The home of George Washington was built in 1860 on what was then considered a double lot on the edge of town. George's intentions were to raise his family here as well as house his business venture "Shrivers' Saloon and Ten Pin Alley." The home was originally built with an adjacent building located just a few steps from the rear of the home and was 16 feet wide by 64 feet long, enough room for two bowling lanes. The bowling alley unfortunately is no longer standing but can be seen in the background of the photograph taken of Lincoln's ride to give his Gettysburg Address. During the winter of 1862, Union soldiers were quartered in the saloon and bowling alley. The saloon has been restored to resemble its original appearance. Sachs Covered Bridge

Known as Sauh’s Bridge during the Civil War, it was built in 1854 by David Spooner from oak and pine. The bridge was repaired in 1997 after heavy rains washed the bridge from its foundation and carried it approx. one hundred yards downstream. The 100-foot bridge spans Marsh Creek and actually connects two area Townships, Cumberland and Freedom. On July 3rd and 4th, 1863, the bridge was used by a portion of the Confederate army, in retreat out of Gettysburg, but is said to have been used by both armies during the time of the Gettysburg conflict. Robert E. Lee had split his army into 2 sections, with one headed Northwest toward Cashtown, the other crossed Sach’s Bridge and headed Southwest. Because of its role in the Confederate retreat and its location near a crude post-battle field hospital, the Sach’s Covered Bridge is a favorite of ghost-hunters. For those who simply enjoy it for its beauty, history, and quiet location, it is a favorite of photographers, fishermen, hikers, bikers and historians alike.
