Stewart, who was also the first to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence, designed the now iconic flag which flies proudly. Sam Houston National ForestAt over 160,000 acres, this National Forest has something for everyone: wilderness, scenic and recreation areas. Enjoy boating, hunting, fishing and hiking on the 128 mile Lone Star Hiking Trail. Keep your eyes open for deer, bears and even alligators! Open year round. There are some user fees. Many areas are wheelchair accessible. Located east of Montgomery. Sam Houston StatueGeneral Sam Houston was a larger than life political figure in Texas in the 1800s and has been commemorated with a 67-foot tall statue in Huntsville. Designed and built by David Adickes, “A Tribute to Courage” is a monument to the man who dedicated his life to serving his country. There is also a Visitor Center and a Gift Shop. Located in Huntsville, 25 miles north of Montgomery. George Bush Presidential Library and MuseumDon’t miss a visit to the Library and Museum dedicated to the 41st President of the United States! The collections include 38,000,000 pages of papers, 1,000,000 photos, 2,500 hours of video and 70,000 artifacts. Learn about his service during WWII and his distinguished career as a congressman, ambassador, director of the CIA, Vice President and President.
