Trinity Alps Off-Roading Guide

Trinity Alps Off-Roading Guide

Enjoy dramatic views of the Trinity Alps Wilderness while experiencing the thrill of off-roading through forest trails. These trails are all convenient to Trinity Lake KOA Holiday and are perfect for a day trip adventure.

Bowerman Ridge Trail

This trail has an easily passable, rough road surface and is located on the south side of Trinity Lake. This trail is great for all experience levels and requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. Don’t miss the Bowerman Barn, an amazing example of hand-crafted design built in 1878 by local rancher Jacob Bowerman.

Deadwood Road

This trail begins as a paved road but quickly turns into a rugged dirt trail. The trail connects the settlements of Lewiston and French Gulch and has amazing scenery all along the way. A fall trip is especially colorful with the maple and oak trees peppered all along the trail. High-clearance 4WD vehicles are preferred for this trail. Don’t miss the historic mining district along Deadwood Creek.

Hall City Cave Trail

This is a short loop trail to Hall City Cave. You will dive along a graded dirt road and then it’s a 0.3 mile hike to the cave. The limestone cave was at the epicenter of The California Gold Rush frenzy in 1848 and fortune seekers still come to the area hoping to strike it rich! Don’t miss the Harrison Gulch mining ruins.

Hobo Gulch Trail

Head into the Trinity Alps Wilderness on this rough dirt surface with mud and sand possible along the way. Access to trails into the Wilderness are available all along the route. There are also opportunities to take a break and catch a fish along this trail and enjoy the great outdoors outside of your vehicle.

Tips for a Fun and Safe Trip

Always leave with a full tank of fuel and take any extra you may need for your adventure. It’s also a good idea to have a spare tire, towing rope and any tools you may need for on-the-trail repairs. Water, sunscreen, first aid kit and snacks are also necessary for a day trip on the trails. Your phone may not work in this dense forest so be sure you let someone know the trail you are taking and who to contact in an emergency.

Trinity Lake KOA Holiday has spacious RV and tent sites with room for extra vehicles and your “toys”.  Book your site and start planning your off-road experience in the Trinity Alps. After a long day on the trails, take a dip in the pool, toast some s’mores and enjoy relaxing with your favorite beverage.
