They were sad to let it go, but it was time. Fifth-generation dairy farmers John and Deborah Steffen knew it was time to change their careers when the cost and energy of keeping up their family farm and urban sprawl far outweighed the money and rewards.

They sold the livestock in 1996 and looked for four years at campgrounds to buy. Finally in 1999, they sold the farm and used the money to purchase their campground. They moved their children and one set of parents with them, and today one son still works in the family business. "We looked at this campground three times and kept coming back to it," John said. "We liked that it was not so hustle and bustle."

Since they purchased the campground, they’ve more than doubled the number of campers. John says that camper comments about the beauty of the park are plentiful.

Two of their grandchildren live with them on the campground. "What better environment in which to raise a child?" John said.

They offer campers the kind of amenities these fellow RVers like to see. John said he and Deborah are proud of their huge pull through sites and smart placement of utilities at each site.

The Steffens still jump in their fifth-wheel camper and travel around visiting other campgrounds and owners. "We love to see America," John said.
