The Alamo

Step into more than 300 years of history at The Alamo, one of San Antonio's most famous landmarks and an important symbol of Texas history. Established in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, the site later became a military outpost and is best known for the Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution.

In February 1836, Texian defenders took control of the Alamo and prepared to defend the mission against the Mexican Army. After a 13 day siege, Mexican troops led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna captured the Alamo on March 6, 1836, killing the defenders who remained inside. Although the Texians lost the battle, the sacrifice of the Alamo defenders became a rallying cry for the Texas Revolution.

Just weeks later, Texian forces under General Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna's army at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. The decisive victory led to Santa Anna's capture and the eventual withdrawal of Mexican forces from Texas. The phrase “Remember the Alamo!” became a lasting symbol of the fight for Texas independence.

Today, visitors can explore the historic Alamo Church, grounds, exhibits and artifacts while learning more about the people and events that shaped Texas history. The Alamo is located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, less than 5 miles from San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday, making it an easy addition to your San Antonio camping vacation.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

Step back into more than 300 years of San Antonio history at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, a National Park Service site preserving four historic Spanish Colonial missions along the San Antonio River. Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada each have an active parish community and offer visitors a unique look at the people, culture and history of early San Antonio.

The missions were established by Spanish Franciscan missionaries in the 1700s and became important communities where Indigenous peoples and Spanish settlers lived and worked. Today, visitors can explore the historic churches and grounds, learn about the missions through exhibits and ranger programs, and experience some of the most significant cultural landmarks in San Antonio.
