If you're detouring from the eastern part of Colorado to Ouray KOA Holiday due to Route 50 being closed, there are several scenic routes and attractions you can explore along the way:
Take Route 24 West to Route 285 North: This route will take you through scenic mountain passes and charming towns. Consider stopping at the historic mining town of Leadville, where you can explore museums, enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or mountain biking, or take a scenic drive along the Top of the Rockies Byway.
Explore the Royal Gorge Region: If you're interested in a slightly longer detour, you can head south from Colorado Springs towards the Royal Gorge Region. Here, you can visit the iconic Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, where you can walk across North America's highest suspension bridge, ride the gondola, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Arkansas River and the surrounding canyon.
Visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park: As you make your way towards Ouray, consider stopping at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This stunning national park features dramatic sheer cliffs and deep, narrow canyons carved by the Gunnison River. You can take scenic drives along the rim of the canyon, hike trails to overlooks, or even participate in ranger-led programs to learn more about the park's geology and wildlife.
Explore the town of Montrose: As you approach Ouray, you'll pass through the town of Montrose. Take some time to explore downtown Montrose, visit local shops and restaurants, or relax in one of the town's parks.
