Meet Your Hosts
Larry and Pat Holtzclaw have been avid campers all of their lives and are dedicated to helping people enjoy the KOA experience. The New Bern campground is the third KOA they have managed.
Joel Tomaselli is the owner of the New Bern KOA, as well as Smithfield and Wilmington N.C. KOA campgrounds. The Holtzclaw's first worked for Tomaselli at the Wilmington KOA, earning the KOA President's Award during the 2 years they managed the campground and managed Smithfield for two years earning the President's Award both years and the Founder's Award for 2008. Larry said they have enjoyed a fine working relationship, and chose to move on to the new challenges of the New Bern KOA earning the President's Award and Founder's Award for 2007, 2008, 2009,2010 and 2011. Their focus is to continue to make improvements, providing a well-equipped and beautiful campground with special attention to the campers.
The couple really enjoys meeting the guests who stay at their campground. "We get a lot of self-satisfaction and enjoyment out of helping people", Larry added.
Larry spent 31 years as a firefighter with the Charlotte, NC Fire Department. Pat worked as a purchasing agent and also raised their two sons and a daughter and the couple enjoys five grandchildren. Together they welcome both new and returning guests to the campground and are eager to assist and make their campers welcome.
For fun the couple loves to camp and ride their Harley.

Known in colonial times as one of the most beautiful public buildings in America, the elegant Georgian-style mansion served as both home of Royal Governor William Tryon and the capital of the Colony of North Carolina. Restored to its 18th-century glory, Tryon Palace is furnished with an outstanding collection of antiques and art. The grounds are devoted to extensive gardens ranging from English formal gardens to a kitchen garden to wilderness garden areas. The complex includes four contrasting homes of exceptional beauty. Interpreters in period costumes conduct tours all year. Take a boat trip three miles off-shore to the islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore. Catch a boat trip out of Harker's Island, Morehead City or Beaufort and enjoy a full day of fun.
Fort Macon, Atlantic Beach, NC
Only a 30 minute drive, Fort Macon offers public access to the surf, sun and sand of the Crystal Coast—as well as a historic landmark. Located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, one of a series of barrier islands along the North Carolina coast, the park is surrounded on three sides by water—the Atlantic Ocean, Beaufort Inlet and Bogue Sound. This area of undisturbed natural beauty is the perfect place to explore salt marshes and estuaries vital to the coastal ecosystem.The park is also home to a Civil War fort with a history as intricate and unique as the waterways of the sound. Visit Fort Macon to enjoy the land's natural beauty and soak up some history.

(252) 466-4906 The largest Marine Corps air station in the nation. Tours are available and might include observation of military working dogs, flying squadrons such as Harriers, search and rescue helicopters, a crash fire and rescue demonstration, or a windshield tour of air station.
Croatan National Forest
141 East Fisher Avenue (252) 638-5628 This was one site of a battle that was fought in New Bern during the Civil War. Outdoor recreation opportunities include camping, picnicking, hiking, hunting, and fishing.
New Bern Academy Museum
Corner of New Street and Hancock Street (252) 514-4951 The New Bern Academy Museum building originally served as a school house for boys and girls, then served as a hospital in the Civil War and in 1881 became part of the New Bern Graded School System. Today there are four permanent exhibits: Early New Bern History, Historic Architecture of New Bern, Civil War and History of Education in New Bern. The Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 1:00pm until 4:00pm and admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students.
National Cemetery

Attmore-Oliver House
513 Broad Street (252) 638-8558 This home (c.1790), headquarters for the New Bern Historical Society, exhibits 18th- and 19th- century furniture and New Bern historical objects, including Civil War artifacts, and a unique doll collection. The house can be rented for special occasions and business meetings.
North Carolina Maritime Museum, Beaufort NC
Visit the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort for a taste of coastal cultures and maritime history. Exhibits feature the state’s rich seafood industry, life-saving stations and lighthouses, and sailboats and motorboats. The Museum is the official repository for artifacts from Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge, which ran aground near Beaufort in 1718.
Airplane Aviation Museum (Havelock) Havelock Tourist Center (Havelock)
The Havelock Tourist Center, a multi-purpose meeting facility that can accommodate up to 600, features an aviation exhibit that highlights Marine Corps aviation in Eastern North Carolina. Four aircraft on loan from the United States Marine Corps and Department of the Navy will be on display, along with several static exhibits featuring local aviation "aces." The Tourist Center Complex includes a waterfront park along Slocum Creek featuring a nature boardwalk and boat ramp.

Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament
An exciting Crystal Coast tradition in mid-June, this is one of the largest sport-fishing tournaments in the country, and is fished by around 200 competitors in substantial cash categories. There are generally around 6 to 8 competitors in each boat.
Big winners are also community organizations that receive tournament support.

Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride September 8 & 9 2012
Bike MS is a 2-day cycling event that raises funds to support people living with multiple sclerosis in eastern North Carolina and throughout the United States. Money raised through this event funds MS research, programs, services, and advocacy. In 2011, over 2,600 participants raised $1,677,423 to create a world free of MS. This year, our goal is to raise $1.7 million!
Bike MS cyclists enjoy two full days of riding through rural eastern North Carolina. Each day, cyclists can choose to ride 30, 75, 50 or 100 miles on fully-supported routes. At the conclusion of each day's ride, cyclists are greeted by cheerful volunteers, a delicious, hot meal, ice cold beverages, and live entertainment. It's a great time, you should join us!
Value Kard Rewards Weekend, Sept. 14 & 15, 2012
This special weekend is for Value Kard Holders, so if you do not have one purchase one at your local KOA or a KOA on your route. We will have special activities and VK holders will pay for Friday night and receive Saturday night for free.
North Carolina Chili Festival October 12 & 13, 2012
This two-day event is sponsored by the Greater Havelock Chamber of Commerce at the City Park off Highway 70 in Havelock, NC.
Walter B. Jones Park in Havelock is the place to be for the first taste of gourmet chili, wings, free music, lots of vendors and fun at the Chili Festival. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point flies in a Pedro helicopter for static display both Friday from 5 to 9 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. For chili-tasters preferring to stay in their vehicles, a drive-through pickup station staffed by volunteer youth service groups serves up 12-ounce containers of wings and a drink Friday evening, and of chili and a drink for $5 Saturday in the City Hall Parking lot off N.C. Highway 101. The annual event is sponsored by the Havelock Chamber of Commerce and the Havelock Rotary Club. Vendor information and tickets are available at the chamber.
