Teddy Roosevelt called the Superstition Mountains "the most beautiful panorama nature has created."

Teddy Roosevelt called the Superstition Mountains "the most beautiful panorama nature has created." You'll see why, not far from the Mesa/Apache Junction KOA, where giant saguaro cacti rise from the Sonoran Desert floor against a backdrop of craggy granite ramparts. Drive the 145-mile Apache Trail loop, resplendent with deep canyons, rugged trails and pristine lakes. Also nearby, climb a short path up to ancient cliff-dweller Indian ruins at Tonto National Monument. Explore with off-road jeep tours or guided horseback rides into the foothills. Phoenix is 30 miles west of the campground, with great restaurants, museums and a choice of Major League Baseball spring training games. A heated pool, a hot tub, assorted games and fine hospitality await at KOA. Savor them as the sun sets over the mountains.

Please note: There is a charge of $3 for additional people.

If you come to the Mesa/Apache KOA, and if you are a fan of the Rolling Stones, then plan to budget time for a little "Stone talk" with the owners, Mike and Rosemary Mortensen. "We go to every Rolling Stones concert there is. We even travel to get there," Rosemary said.

Besides being ardent classic rock music fans, the Mortensens are campground owners of 10 years. Mike was an equipment route owner while Rosemary was (and still is) a register nurse in neurology/neurosurgery. Rosemary said Mike went through "some sort of mid-life crisis" and emerged owning a KOA campground.

Mike owned his own business all his life and became accustomed to being his own boss and keeping his own schedule. After attending a seminar and getting encouragement from the KOA Corporation, the Mortensens purchased the campground in the desert and left their home on the much cooler Wasatch Front of Salt Lake City. "It has been 10 years, and we are still getting acclimated," Rosemary said.

Their worked is interrupted for Rolling Stones concerts and trips to England to visit their daughter. Back at home, they keep their campground clean to make a great impression on their guests."Ninety percent of the campers tell us how clean and nice the campground is," Rosemary said.

Their landscape makes them unique, and their attention to details ensures their KOA is a safe place for customers, Rosemary added.
