You'll feel like you're getting away from it all when you pull into this KOA, where half of the 20-acre campground is wooded.

You'll feel like you're getting away from it all when you pull into this KOA, where half of the 20-acre campground is wooded. Yet you're just off I-70 and close to all the city sights and casinos. Park on a shaded, level pull thru or choose an air-conditioned Camping Cabin. There's a multipurpose room for groups and local catering available. With mini golf, swimming, a game room, a playground and sports courts to entertain kids and adults, it's a great place for reunions. Kansas City offers loads to do: Cheer the Royals and Chiefs. You can shop at the famous Country Club Plaza, Crown Center or outlet malls. Visit Harry Truman's home, library and museum. Get your thrills at Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun (pick up discounted tickets in the campground store-along with homemade apple butter). Be sure to ask where to sample the city's famous barbecue too. A Bass Pro Shops retail store is just minutes from the campground.

Meet Your Hosts

For the past nine years, Melvin and Mary Lueck have managed the Kansas City/Oak Grove KOA. The hospitality business was not new to the Lueck's. Managing a Best Western gave them good experience but lacked fun. "We wanted a more fun, relaxing atmosphere," said Mary, "So when we were offered positions as managers, we said 'yes' immediately." According to Mary, visitors to campgrounds are different from hotel guests. "The people we deal with daily here are more relaxed because they are on vacation," she said. Melvin and Mary are proud of their campground service. "We try to treat everyone the way we would want to be treated," added Mary.

The campground has about 30 percent of their campers returning and the other percentage is made up of "off-the-road campers." "We are a traveler's campground," said Mary.

Melvin and Mary empower their employees to make decisions to help customers with any kind of problem that may arise. The staff is small, so a family-like atmosphere is part of the campground personality.

Not only does the couple run the campground, but Mary owns an accounting and tax practice, and Melvin does remodeling projects. The couple is busy, but they still find time to spend with their family. They have 15 grandchildren and enjoy traveling to see them.
