Bird Watching Photo

Bird Watching

The diversity of habitat in southwestern New Mexico makes the Silver City area a year-round bird watching destination. The Gila River with its lush river willow thickets and cottonwoods provides prime habitat for 60% of the bird species seen in our state. The scenic mountains of the Gila National Forest and surrounding grasslands expand opportunities to see a variety of species. 339 species have been seen in our area. The spring migrations usually begin in mid-April. Your hosts, Jon and Kris Greenwood, have birding guides, maps, and tips on the best locations. Kris is an avid bird photographer.

Meet Your Hosts

Jon and Kris Greenwood

"Thanks to all our guests for making us a President's Award and Founder's Award winning Campground. We look forward to another great year!"

Jon and Kris were in the hum drum insurance business back in Michigan. They had their own agency in the small town of Whitehall. Not to many get excited about insurance. However campers do get excited about going camping! They decided to make a business change and leave the Insurance game behind. What have they found? Lot's of happy campers here at the Silver City KOA! Campers who enjoy exploring the wonderful area while staying with the Greenwood's at their beautiful park just outside Silver City NM.Jon and Kris also are still exploring the area. Living here for a year now, they have some favorite activities. Both really enjoy golfing. Here is Silver City we have a great course. Jon says, Coming from Michigan I find our course here a challenge. Biggest difference is when you miss the fairway back in Michigan your not hitting out of rocks! Surprisingly this has helped both Jon and Kris' games! We are playing better here because you have too! I think it really raises your concentration level. Says Kris. She had her best 18 ever just a week back. Both also enjoy water activities such as fishing and boating. Can you do that here? Yes! We have several local lakes. Jon and Kris have visited Bill Evans Lake, Lake Roberts and Bear Canyon Lake. Jon caught a nice stringer full of trout last fall. He has a wooden kayak he built and two more in the garage under construction. So bring your boat, canoe or kayak and do some fishing or paddling here in Grant County.Jon and Kris are used to small town. Silver City though seems extra relaxed to them and both are learning to adjust to that pace. What a terrible problem to have! During the summer season Kris is busy on weekends running the cafe. She cooks breakfasts for guests, and just recently has perfected her own Green Chile sauce. She added breakfast burrito's to the menu with the Green Chile. They are a hit! Locals say it is the best "Green Sauce" they have had. Jon seems to be always working on some project new or old, but both ,though busy, love to take time to sit and visit with guests. We invite you to come and stay and our Silver City KOA! Enjoy the hospitality and warmth of the Southwest. Be assured Jon, Kris and staff will do their best to make your stay and enjoyable one. Take your time going but hurry back to the Silver City KOA.The Greenwood's
