Started in 1935 and revitalized in 1956, the Kentucky Derby Festival is one of the most significant events in Louisville, Kentucky. This massive celebration lasts the two weeks leading up to the first Saturday in May, the Kentucky Derby. There are more than 70 special events throughout the festival, most of which are free and family-friendly.
The Kentucky Derby Festival kicks off with one of the nation's largest annual fireworks show — Thunder Over Louisville. The family-friendly event features a day-long air show ranked in the top five of air shows across the country, then ends with a spectacular firework display along the Ohio River.
The Pegasus Parade began in 1956 as a way for Louisville locals to get more involved with the Derby. It has since grown into one of the largest parades in the United States, with celebrities, colorful floats, marching bands, equestrian units and other participants taking part. The parade traditionally took place on the Thursday before the Derby but has since shifted to the Sunday before to include more community members.
In July, Louisville hosts the largest and most competitive girls' basketball tournament in the United States.
