If you seek adventure, grab your suitcase and climb aboard this renovated train car which offers a comfortable lodging space with added historic charm.

The Caboose's Railroad History

The train car now serving as a lodging space is a 1928 railroad caboose. It once traveled along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which stretched from Chicago to California, with a portion traversing Southeastern Colorado. The railway was established in the latter half of the 1800s, and the caboose still has the red and yellow exterior colors that decorated the trains traveling this route. It also has the railroad's logo painted on the side.

The railroad that this car traveled was once one of the largest in the country. It was even memorialized in a popular song, “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe.” Judy Garland sang the song in “The Harvey Girls” film. The railroad was often traveled by passengers, especially in the 1900s, and contributed to many advancements, like being one of the first to add dining cars to passenger trains.

Now Outfitted for Train Car Stays

Since it retired from the railroad, the caboose has been converted into a cabin on wheels for caboose camping in La Junta. The interior has rustic Colorado blue pine walls and copper-stamped tin ceilings. You can also appreciate decor elements like a bunk bed rope ladder, marble shower and pull-chain toilet.

The caboose hearkens back to its heritage with themed art like stained glass railroad decor and a coin mural of railroad tracks on the bathroom floor. You can even see a beautiful view of your surroundings with seating in the cupola.

Here are a few details about the lodging arrangements:

  • Lodging for five: A queen bed, two bunks and a hammock provide space for five sleepers.
  • Bathroom and kitchen: You get a full bath and shower with a partial kitchen area.
  • Amenities: The car includes a TV, mini fridge, microwave and heating and cooling.
  • Patio area: Outside the caboose, you can relax around a fire ring or cook dinner on a gas grill.

Your rental also includes linens to save you some packing space. You can even bring your pet to stay in the cabin with you for a fee.
