Whether you are with friends or family, hiking is an excellent way to stay active while having fun. Here are some of the best hiking areas near Santa Fe to try:

Pecos National Historic Park

Only 18 minutes away (13.7 miles), this must-see Historic Park is open from early September until late May 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and until late May to early September 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. This is a FREE to enter the park (donations are accepted) and includes an easy 1.2-mile round trip loop. Start at the visitors center and enjoy the beauty of historic adobe churches, ruins and vast history!

Sun Mountain Trailhead

Only 16 minutes away (10.9 miles) from Santa Fe KOA Journey and includes a moderate to hard, 1.6 miles out and back trail which takes an average of 1 hr 30 mins. This trail is a steady to steep mountain climb with rocks, cactus and beautiful views overlooking the city of Santa Fe. Also dog and kid-friendly!

 (Take a right out of the park, take a right on El Gancho Way, Left on Old Santa Fe Trail, and continue for 2.2 miles - trailhead parking directly on the right side of the road.)

Eldorado Community Preserve & Trailhead

These trails are only 7-15 minutes away (3.5-8 miles) away from the Santa Fe KOA Journey and are easy to moderate (mostly flat with mild elevation). They are dog and children-friendly and include multiple trails ranging from 1-mile loops.

(Take a right out of the park, take the left under the bridge at Ojo De La Vaca, and follow the road - trailhead parking locations will be along the left side of the road at various locations. Another option is to follow Ojo De La Vaca road until it turns into gravel. Trailhead parking will be on the right.)

Galisteo Basin Preserve

The Galisteo Basin Preserve is only 12 minutes away (9 miles) from the Santa Fe KOA Journey and includes 10,000 acres & 50 miles of trails. The trails are bike friendly and have beautiful sunset viewing areas. Points of interest include: Trailheads - Thumb, Morning Star, Cowboy Shack & Cottonwood. Overlooks - Sphinx, Happy Valley, Heaven's Gate, Cats Pause, Andrew’s, Knocking on Heaven’s Door & Rider’s Rest.

Dorothy Stewart Trail

 Just 22 minutes away (13.1 miles) from Santa Fe KOA Journey, this dog-friendly trail includes a 2-mile Loop that is relatively easy with 307ft elevation gain and takes on average, 1 hour to complete.

 Dale Ball Trails

These dog-friendly trails are 25 minutes away (14.4 miles) from the Santa Fe KOA Journey and include a 3.1-mile loop with 393ft elevation gain that is considered an easy route, taking on average, 1 1/2 hours to complete. There are also longer options & connecting trails for more challenging adventures!

Chamisa Trail

Only 29 minutes away (20.4 miles), this 4.5-mile loop with 1148 ft elevation gain is moderately challenging to hard route that takes 2-3 hours on average to complete and has options to connect to other trails.

Two Mile Pond Trail

This non-dog-friendly trail is only 23 minutes away (16.3 miles) and includes a 1.5-mile loop with 91 ft elevation. Considered an easy and peaceful trail that is kid-friendly and perfect for bird-watching!
