In the Huron-Manistee National Forest is the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area, which consists of 3,450 acres of National Forest System lands with preservation protection. A significant part of the wilderness area is the sand dunes.
What was once a land full of glaciers 16,000 years ago is now the biggest collection of freshwater dunes in the world. The Nordhouse Dunes on Lake Michigan formed when the glaciers melted, leaving behind boulders, gravel, clay and more. Over time, the rocks and boulders eroded, turning into sand, which the wind blew around to form large dunes.

The wilderness area has a 10-mile hiking area accessible from either the Nurnberg Trailhead or Lake Michigan Recreation Area. You can also go birding to try and see birds native to the region, like the endangered piping plover.
