Mardi Gras Galveston

Mardi Gras Galveston

Everything is bigger in Texas, and the state's Mardi Gras celebrations are no exception. The city of Galveston, Texas, hosts the country's third-largest Mardi Gras celebration with colorful beads, fun parades and much more to make your experience truly magical.

What to Know Before You Go

Knowing what to expect before planning your trip to Galveston for Mardi Gras is essential. By planning, you can ensure you hit all of the celebrations on your list while having plenty of time to relax on the island's white sand beaches.

When Is Mardi Gras in Galveston?

Galveston's Mardi Gras festivities occur two weeks before the beginning of Lent and end on the official Mardi Gras date. Most events and celebrations occur in Galveston's downtown area in The Historic Strand District. Other activities, such as the Galveston Mardi Gras parade route, typically take place along the beachfront.

What to Expect

There is a gate fee to enter The Historic Strand District, and children under 12 have free entry. If you choose to drive to the event, you will find parking at the following locations:

  • 20th & Postoffice Street
  • 20th & Market Street
  • 21st & Market Street
  • 22nd & Market Street
  • 25th & Harborside Drive

You may also find metered street parking depending on how early you arrive at the festival.

What to Bring

Mardi Gras is a time to be as colorful as you wish. This may mean wearing a clever costume, a sequined outfit or just your favorite bright color. Regardless of what you wear, you will take home plenty of beads. As each Galveston Mardi Gras parade float passes, those on the floats will throw beads, trinkets and other colorful items for revelers to catch and enjoy.

In addition to a fun costume or outfit, you will want to bring a jacket. While the colorful festivities may remind you of warm summer days, Mardi Gras takes place in February and March, making it essential to bring a coat to stay warm against those chilly Texas winter nights.
