Meet Your Hosts
Tim and Bobbi Hulen were looking for a dramatic lifestyle change before purchasing the Amarillo KOA. Both spending over twenty years in the banking industry as executives, they were craving a break from corporate America. "We were searching for something that would enable us to spend more time together as a family," said Tim.
Together with their three children, Tim and Bobbi left their longtime residence of San Diego, California and headed east for Amarillo, Texas in 1994. "Never did we think that we would live in Texas, but we couldn't be happier. The people here are phenomenal and the laid-back lifestyle is exactly what we were in need of", said Bobbi.
Being long-time campers and having a passion for being outdoors, the Hulens immediately enjoyed owning a campground. With the help of their children, Amarillo KOA remains a clean and fun place to be. "We have great pride in ownership and the quality of camping for our guests. We love our campground and especially value our unique gift store," said Tim.
Having experience in working with the public has been very beneficial for Tim and Bobbi. "We treat our guests as we would want to be treated and we have always loved working with people. We strive to provide the best possible camping experience here at Amarillo KOA," said Bobbi. Spending time together as a family and working alongside their children is what makes owning the campground so special for the Hulens. Daughter, Kellie is the current store manager, overseeing scheduling, inventory, and guest relations.
In their spare time, the Hulens can be found traveling in their RV and spending time with their grown children and grandchildren.

Cowboy Morning & Evenings
A 20-minute ride across the prairie on team-drawn wagons will end at a campsite perched on the rim of Palo Duro Canyon where you will get a taste of what the Old West was really like. Lake Meredith
The area's largest lake, located 50 miles northeast of Amarillo, offers fishing, swimming, sailing, and houseboat rentals. An added lake attraction is "Lone Star Rising", a musical celebration of the Lone Star State. Don Harrington Discovery Center

Wildcat Bluff Nature Center
Rolling grasslands, threaded with a nature trail on over 600 acres features wildflowers, knee-high grasses and huge cottonwoods. Musical Epic "TEXAS Legacies"
TEXAS Musical Drama Internationally-acclaimed musical extravaganza performed in a natural amphitheater in majestic Palo Duro Canyon. Now in its 47th season, this delightful musical has been viewed by over 3 million visitors. A 600-foot cliff serves as the backdrop as singer and dancers take you back to the settling of the Texas Panhandle in the 1800's. Cal Farley's Boys Ranch
Located 35 miles northwest of Amarillo on Hwy. 385, this 10,700-acre working ranch for boys include Old Tascosa, Boothill Cemetery, and a museum. Mr. Cal Farley started Boys Ranch in 1939, as a safe haven for runaways and unwanted children. It was always a place just for boys, until finally in 1992 they decided to finally open the doors to girls.(806) 372-2341
Historic Sites
Llamo Cemetery - Officially started in 1890 has always been Amarillo's principal burying ground. Most of the prominent pioneer families were laid to rest here.
The Sante Fe Train Depot - Located in downtown Amarillo, "Madam Queen" is the only (prototype) 2-10-2 "Texas type" locomotive 5000 especially built for the Plains Division of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1930. The locomotive's name was derived from an imaginary character on the Amos and Andy show.
Polk Street Historic District - Between 15th and 17th streets, in downtown Amarillo, two blocks of Polk Street were developed between 1905 and 1915 and are considered the finest stretch of residential neighborhood. Considered once the most elegant street in the city, this district includes the historic Harrington House, Lee Bivins House, J.D. Shuford House, Dehoney-Masterson House, Shelton-Houghton House, Galbraith House, Eakle House, and Early House.
Texas Panhandle War Memorial - Located at I-27 and Georgia, next to the Randall County Annex, this memorial is a tribute to all the men and women of the Texas Panhandle who answered the call to duty. The War Memorial is unique in that it encompasses all the wars from the Spanish-American War to the present. A history monolith can be found on each, as well as the name tablets of those individuals that were killed or missing in action from the Texas Panhandle.

In 2006 the highlight in Amarillo was the grand opening of the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts. Amarillo KOA is a pet friendly campground. Our K-9 Park has become very popular with our 4-legged friends. While your pet is in the K-9 fenced area, you can take their leash off and let them enjoy the "doggie" obstacles while you rest under the shaded bench area. Wiley Hicks Jr. Memorial Roping March 31 & April 1, 2012
Make-A-Wish North Texas will host the 28th Annual Wiley Hicks, Jr. Memorial on Saturday and Sunday, March 31st & April 1st at the Amarillo National Center at the Tri-State Fairgrounds in Amarillo, Texas. This WORLD SERIES QUALIFIER consists of a two-day format of Team Roping and Calf Roping along with Muttin Bustin' and Dummy Ropin' for the kids. We are pleased to announce the event will be a World Series Qualifier for the second year in a row. Ropers from across the country will participate in this benefit roping not only for their chance at the World Series Roping later this year, but to help grant more wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions in the Texas Panhandle.
The Texas Plains Region is honored to have the Wiley Hicks, Jr. name and brand associated with this long standing event in Amarillo, TX. Wiley had a passion for cowboys and kids and we are able to preserve this enthusiasm by honoring both Wiley and his family with this memorial event.

Welcome to the United States Team Roping Championships, the world’s leading team roping member organization and one of the largest single discipline equine groups in the nation. The action starts at 8 am daily at the Amarillo National Center.
Based in Stephenville, Texas, USTRC represents more than 35,000 members worldwide who enjoy the sport of team roping. A 3/8 mile, high-bank clay oval featuring IMCA Modified, Super Stock and Street Car racing every Saturday night from April through September. Located in east Amarillo, along Lakeside Rd. (Loop 335) just south of Interstate 40. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission is $9 for adults and $6 for seniors. Children younger than 6 are admitted free. Nightly, from Memorial Day thru Labor Day Weekend (weather permitting), Amarillo KOA offers the ever popular Jaden's Haywagon rides. Hop on board and listen to the sounds of country/western tunes as Jaden's Haywagon is pulled around the campground by our John Deere tractor.
(Jaden is the grandson of Bobbi & Tim Hulen, owners of Amarillo KOA and is the oldest son of Kellie Tijerina, daughter of Tim & Bobbi. Kellie has worked alongside her parents since she was 11 years old and she continues to work at Amarillo KOA).
On several occasions, Amarillo KOA will announce the fun filled "Wet" Haywagon rides. Be sure to come prepared for these "wet" rides - pack your squirt guns!

TEXAS (Outdoor Musical Drama) - Early June through late August
This internationally-known outdoor musical drama has been performed since 1965 in majestic Palo Duro Canyon State Park and it a MUST SEE while in our area.
A talented cast reaches into the past to reveal the struggles, strengths, celebrations, burials and politics of the early settlers, cowboys and Native Americans.The best attended outdoor musical drama in the U.S., TEXAS is performed Tuesday through Sunday from early June through mid-August. Ticket prices range from $9.95 to $29.95 (plus fees), varying with the seat location and date of the show. An optional dinner is available, ask about details when you call. Range Riders Rodeo ~ July 5th through July 7th, 2012
Talented cowboys celebrate the region's western heritage at the Will Rogers Range Rider Arena located at Loop 335 & 8829 S. Washington. West Texas Cutting Horse Futurity ~ August 11, 2012 through August 19, 2012
Hundreds of the best cutting horses are in Amarillo this week for the West Texas Futurity being held at the Amarillo National Center today through Sunday. Spectator admission is free.The horses and their riders are competing in eight different classes based on factors such as the horse's age and whether the rider is a professional or a non-pro.
Cutting developed on Texas ranches in the 1800s as a way to separate individual cows from the herd. The first record of cutting as an arena spectator event came at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth, Texas, when a cutting horse exhibition was added to the annual rodeo in 1919. It became a competitive event the following year.

The Adequan Select Show takes place at the Amarillo National Center. The world’s largest, single-breed world championship horse show open exclusively to amateur exhibitors age 50 and older starts with cutting preliminaries at the Amarillo National Center in Amarillo, Texas. Exhibitors qualified for the event by earning a predetermined number of points throughout the year to secure a spot in each of the classes. Good Times Celebration Barbarcue - 2nd Thursday in September
This event is held the 2nd Thursday in September on the Chamber of Commerce grounds located at 1000 S Polk. Over 100 cooking teams compete to be the best.The Barbecue is a Chamber tradition; giving business owners, managers and their employees a chance to network with the business community in a relaxed, fun atmosphere that just happens to feature some of the most mouthwatering food found anywhere. Nearly 100 cooking teams will prepare more than 5 tons of meats for a crowd that exceeds 7,000 in Amarillo, Texas. Cooking teams will compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place honors for the best ribs, brisket and other meats in professional, corporate or amateur divisions. Winners will be selected by 100 volunteer judges. There is a Showmanship competition which often sees cooking teams use extravagant themes for their costumes and booth decoration. The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association World Championship ~ October 17th through October 21, 2012

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is the modern version of the legendary Western shoot-outs. The fastest, most accurate competitor wins. Cowboy mounted shooting, formed in 1991, is a fast-action timed event in which riders use two .45-caliber single-action revolvers each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition to pop balloons on a course in an arena.

Hot Air Balloon Glow in Amarillo. Balloons will inflate after dark and use there fire burners to light up the night sky next to McDonald Lake nestled in John Stiff Park. Gates open at 5:00 PM and admission is free. Please come out and mingle with the Pilots and Crews as they set up to dazzle your eyes and cameras with a beautiful show. Dress warmly as the nights can get cold.
"Hoist Your Colors" Morning Event
There will be a Pilot Competition flight. It is considered a Har and Hound contest where one pilot will take off from the field and all the other balloon pilots objectives are to follow his flying and drop a bean bag closest to his landing spot. It is a true challenge of piloting skills, especially in West Texas.
An Alternative Event has been scheduled if weather is not permitting to fly.

Mini Sprint cars consist of an open-wheel chassis with a 600cc, 4-cylinder engine with a higher weight to horsepower ratio than any dirt track cars in production.With speeds reaching 70 mph inside the Amarillo National Center, on a banked track, the racing is going to be exciting.

World Championship Ranch Rodeo (WRCA) ~ November 8 through November 11, 2012
See real cowboys from the U.S. and Canada, who actually earn their day-to-day living on a ranch, compete for the title of World Champion in events like wild cow milking, bronco riding, team penning and more.
On the second weekend of each November, cowboys and cowgirls from across the US and Canada make their way to Amarillo to chase the title of World Champion. These folks are the real deal, making their living from the back of a horse, year-round.This year's WCRR, sponsored by the Working Ranch Cowboy Association, runs from Nov. 8-11, 2012 at the Amarillo Civic Center. Tickets are $16-24 for Thursday and $21-28 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.Admission includes a rodeo performance and the ranch horse competition, Pokey's junior rodeo finals, Cowboy Art Show & Sale, a magnificent Trade & Trappings Show and Ranch Expo.

A magical light parade in downtown Amarillo presented by Center City.
The Center City Electric Light Parade welcomes the Christmas season with lighted floats. The theme for 2012 is "The Nutcracker." To enter a float, please call Center City at 806-372-6744. Entry fee is $25 for nonprofit groups and $35 for businesses. The parade starts at 11th and Polk and goes to Fourth and Buchanan where the city of Amarillo will light the city's Christmas Tree.

Llano Cemetery by Twilight ~ Late October
Take a trip back in time with a twilight history tour through the historic section of Amarillo and hear colorful stories of the past, people, and places. Tour Amarillo’s oldest cemetery on a hay ride or walking tour and learn about the fascinating stories of Amarillo’s past. The Llano Cemetery Tour by Twilight is a collaborative effort between PPHM (Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum) and the Llano Cemetery Association. The US Team Penning Association ~ Late October through Early November
In Penning, teams of three horse and rider combinations use their combined athleticism, horsemanship and general "cowiness" to humanely separate particular cows and herd them into the penning area in under 60 seconds. Time is of the essence in Penning and Sorting, making this challenging sport even more exciting as the clock ticks. In seconds, the most skilled horses and riders can find their specified cow, separate it from the herd and move it to the penning area without ever touching the animal. Penning and Sorting offer participants the opportunity to incorporate all of their working cow horse skills in a fast-paced, fun, team-oriented competition while embracing the roots of the western lifestyle.
Held each year in late October through early November, the US Team Penning Association World finals centers on the sport of ranch sorting and its sister discipline, team penning. Based on teamwork with riders on horseback, this activity evolved from the work of separating cattle into pens for branding. It's a race against the clock to sort the cattle correctly.
