Bear Lake, known as the Caribbean of the Rockies, is a gorgeous freshwater lake situated along the Utah-Idaho border. In addition to the lake, the area is also renowned for its fascinating caves. Here are some of the most popular caves near Bear Lake, Utah.
Drive up to Idaho to visit Minnetonka Cave in the Cache National Forest. The karst limestone cave offers plenty of beautiful sights. Go on a tour with a guide who will lead you up and down the 888 stairs it takes to see the rock formations. You'll have plenty of stops to learn about the shapes and catch your breath. The temperature stays at 40 degrees Fahrenheit all year, so ensure you and your family have light jackets to stay warm.
Minnetonka Cave is 45 minutes from Bear Lake / Marina Side KOA Holiday.
Drive a little farther north to Preston, Idaho, to visit the Paris Ice Cave. The small cave formed at the bottom of a sinkhole is a unique place to explore. The ice never melts in the cave, so you can see the formations year-round.
Paris Ice Cave is about 50 minutes away from the KOA Campground.
If you're driving down the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway, stop by Ricks Spring, a karst spring with a small grotto. Park at the pullout and walk down to the cave to see the water flowing out. The cave's depth is about 25 feet, so you could also explore it for a bit. Take headlamps and flashlights with you to see while you are in the cave.
Ricks Spring is around 30 minutes from the campground.
Travel to Hobbit Caves to see kid-sized caves reminiscent of "Lord of the Rings." Take Highway 89 to Right Fork Canyon Road to access the caves. You'll see a small waterfall and cross a river before arriving. If you have kids, the caves are the perfect size for them to explore.
Hobbit Caves is around 40 minutes from the campground.
