Winter Highlights

Winter HighlightsAño Nuevo State Park – Elephant Seals! The Park offers naturalist-guided walks between December 15 and March 31, which feature the seals in their natural habitat. To view the seals during this period, you must be on a Guided Walk. These popular three-mile walks, over rolling sand dunes, last about two and a half hours and are considered moderately strenuous. They operate daily from early morning to mid-afternoon rain or shine. Reservations can be made starting October 20th up to 56 days in advance, and must be made at least one day in advance.
Reserve America handles all reservations for Ano Nuevo either by phone (800)-444-4445 or online (
Any unreserved tickets, no-shows or other available spots are sold directly at the park daily on a first-come first-served basis, starting at 8:30am. If you are unable to get reservations ahead of time, your best bet is to arrive at the park at 8:30am and put yourself or your group on a waitlist. If you arrive anytime after 1pm without a reservation your chances of getting on a tour are pretty low. Tickets cost $7 per person over 3 years; parking rates $10 per car. Año Nuevo is about 3 miles South of Costanoa on Highway 1.
Natural Bridges State Park-Tours of the Monarch Grove!October 21st through January Saturdays & Sundays at 11:00 & 2:00
Join a Docent Naturalist for a tour of the state designated monarch butterfly preserve at Natural Bridges State Beach.  Monarch butterflies are returning this fall to their winter home along our coast.  Learn the story of this beautiful creature and its fascinating seasonal migration. Public tours are offered on weekends and no reservations are necessary, or you may call 423-4609 to arrange a tour for a group of 10 or more.  Fall walks begin October 21 and continue through January.  Monarch numbers vary; usually the highest numbers are visible in November/December.  Meet at the Visitor Center for the hour-long program.  The walk is wheelchair accessible. Natural Bridges is about 25 miles South of Costanoa.
