What Is Quechee Gorge?

Quechee Gorge is Vermont's deepest gorge, extending 165 feet deep and 1 mile long. It was formed by glaciers more than 13,000 years ago. The gorge is located just off U.S. Route 4.

The land around Quechee Gorge was initially owned by the A.G. Dewey Company, a major wool processor established in the area around 1869. The company employed many from the mill village and invented various types of machinery and products, becoming well-known for excellence throughout the country. The mill closed in 1952 to relocate to New Hampshire.

In the same year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bought the land as part of a flood control plan and constructed a dam. Throughout the 1960s, the area was further developed for recreational use, becoming the gorgeous location it is today.
