Tent Reviews

We stayed the last few nights the KOA was open for the season, so we should've assumed a lot of things would be closed or shut down already. It really was unfortunate that we couldn't experience it in full. Only negative comment was by the last day the womens bathroom had only 1 soap dispenser that still had soap in it. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The showers were always very clean.

Very unhappy about the availability of toilets at tent site. Very far walk around RV sites to get to them. Although I knew water water not available at my site, I did expect a working pump somewhere nearby. This was not the case. The jets in the hot tub did not work. Other than that the facility was nice enough. Just didn’t impress me. Perhaps the previous two KOA stay were just above and beyon

Great place to stay. We tent camped and the sites were nice. A restroom closer to the tent sites would be a huge bonus.

Disappointed in lack of amenities for tent campers. Bathrooms are too far to walk to. Very plentiful bathrooms for RV guests

Friendly and knowledgeable staff!

There was human feces in the women’s bathroom of comfort station #4. I reported this to the front building and was told that a supervisor would send someone to address it. It was still there the next morning. This KOA is more consumed with the activities and rentals rather than the basic cleanliness and upkeep of their facilities.

Facilities are top notch. Only suggestion I have is for a breakfast restaurant that is open at 7am for a simple hot breakfast menu.

Other than all the atvs/sxs with people and underage drivers and annoying people's dogs . The facility and staff was excellent!

We enjoyed ourselves very much. Beautiful place and the staff where excellent

we wanted to switch campsites at the last minute and you were able to accommodate us, which was clutch in us having a great stay! one suggestion: if you can carve out some sidewalks or pathways from the tent campgrounds to the restrooms/showers in the RV campground so the tent campers don't have to walk all the way around, that would be awesome. we didn't want to go thru anyone's site. THANK YO

Generally, the stay was great - all the staff were really wonderful! The showers were incredibly gross, but I suppose that's to be expected at a huge campground. Also, and not entirely the campground's fault, but there were kids at the playground next to us yelling and screaming at 6am every morning (despite it being posted that playground hours were 8am to dusk). Other than that it was great.

Loved everything about our stay! Fran helped me check in and was so awesome! Couldn't have asked for a better stay!

Nice amenities. The Wi-Fi wasn’t great, but most people don’t need that in a place like this… Becky was a great (unofficial) helpful and knowledgeable area guide.

Excellent facilities and campground although nowhere to wash dishes if staying in a tent and all bathrooms are in rv areas not tent areas where they are needed, but a great stay overall!

Very accommodating. Campground was quiet at night, shower house was kept clean, friendly staff. Our kids had fun swimming and did about 18 rounds, if not more, of mini golf. Horses nearby, BONUS. The drive to attractions near us was minimal. Definitely recommend.

We love Palmer Gulch and this year arranged to meet family here because we loved it so much 3 years ago. Would definitely recommend!!

Clean bath area…well informed and polite staff who were always happy to assist!

Love the mountains only problem was I was unable to get someone to show me to my tent site. Love the campground we will be back many more times.

We enjoyed all the amenities offered at the campground and had a great time. I would recommend getting a golf cart if you can afford it as things can be a far distance away depending where you are. I enjoyed the epic mountain views and two swimming pools. The onsite paid amenities are costly but the horseback riding was fun for the kids. Was within driving distance of a lot of attractions.

We had the most amazing time! We tented for 8 days and it was the perfect home base. We would go explore during the days and enjoy the evening at the fun zone. One thing I wish you would consider is to put a notice on the biker rally. I had no idea we were staying during the rally and would have chosen a different time frame to come. A notice somewhere would have helped me plan our trip better

We love the KOA at Palmer Gulch!
Aug 10, 2023
We’ve been to the Palmer Gulch KOA several times over the years and love it. The tent site we were assigned (34) was the worst tent site we’ve had. I can’t fathom who thought it would be a good idea to put a family of 6 + 3 dogs on top of other campers on this ridiculously small campground. The site was small and having my 2 year old nap impossible. We upgraded the site but it was a downgrad

Was standing at the check-in counter with no one at the reception… a very polite staff walked passed and said sorry give me a second. She went to the office area behind counter and got this guy who must have been eating his lunch. He came to the counter, unfriendly then proceeded to BURP in our face. Not enough characters to write review! Park is great this guy should be cleaning toilets!

Dirty bathrooms, flooded campsite and staff unwilling to help. It ruined our vacation such that we left early. I will tell everyone I know and post on all my social media accounts of my dissatisfaction with this campground and will warn others to avoid.

Great stay as always. Registration staff and Outpost employee at the checkout were all very friendly and helpful

We enjoyed our stay at Palmer Gulch. We tent camped with our kids. They loved the pool and “gold mining.” Close to Custer State Park. I liked the campground but the bathrooms could have been cleaner. I would recommend a more regular bathroom cleaning schedule. Thanks!

Great spot for a tent #34, fun stuff for kids and good food at the grill, all the visiting workers were polite, professional and helpful. We really enjoyed the youth group (Nathan and Alyssa) providing the Sunday worship service, it was an unexpected highlight and great way to end our trip. Kaylee was very helpful at the front desk.

My husband and I stayed here on the second to last leg of honeymoon road trip.. was very clean, quiet and staff was all very friendly!

The campsite was too small for what it said it was able to handle, also said it had a grass pad which was dirt. The employees were friendly, the pancake breakfast was a bargain and the location was very convenient.

The resort was so awesome. It could be the whole vacation itself. I will definitely be back. The only thing I would have liked different would be have a bathroom/outhouse available for the tent sites in the 30’s.

It was great. Nice clean fun place can't wait To see you guys again, thank you so much.

The people in the site next to use played music and were loud through all hours of the night. The noise ordinance was not enforced.

Staff were friendly and working hard to accommodate my need. Bathrooms very clean. However, campground space units were rather small.

Loved all the amenities for my daughter. Very kid friendly. Nice staff. Clean grounds and beautiful Forrest! We can’t wait to come back!

We enjoyed our stay, vents in the shower need cleaned according to my wife, maybe an actual pull in for vehicle at spot 638. There’s a bad step and the park and I noticed some of the handles were missing from the hand swings and the park. Things could always be better, I think y’all do good. I own a business so I understand what needs to go into the overall product. I’m always available for

Stay was great. Impressive job packing that many people in and not making it feel crowded or hectic. Great amenities. Main criticism is insufficient men's bathroom stalls. 2 stalls was NOT enough for the number of people its intended to service.

Very friendly staff, full of suggestions . Fun environment, clean restrooms/showers. WiFi was hit or miss, but that was actually a plus I stayed off my phone!!!! Thanks and we’ll return sometime in the future!

Very nice people! Clean! Great environment!

We loved it wished there was a private adult pool kids were jumping into hot tub in new section and there was little to relax. A pool side bar/food stand would of been nice. Also a cafe for breakfast for us tent campers. No coffee shops open that offer decaf for early risers. Wine/beer caters only to cappuccino and lattes. No Mediterranean options

Very comfortable tent area. Grass tent pad was nice. However the mosquitoes were bad. As for facilities were very nice.

It’s a nice place but way to expensive for a tent site.

My experiences at KOA's have not been great...up until this point. We planned a Mt Rushmore trip, and I am 100% happy we chose the KOA to stay. 3 days and 4 nights. We went over Memorial Day weekend. You will get rain and some inclement weather. We packed most of our food, but we did partake in the pancake breakfast. Kid loved it. We rented a UTV for an afternoon for 2hrs. Worth it. You go on the back trails, and if you are adventurous enough, go on the gnarly trails too. You can drive UTV's on the open road here as long as yours is street legal with plates, I believe. This was the perfect base camp for the following activities in the area: Mt Rushmore, Bear Country, Keystone, Hill City, Rapid City, The 1880 Train (the train was ok, good for kids who haven't been on an old steamer.) The camp grounds themselves are great! Pool, shopping, horseback riding, little shops to visit. We made some really great memories here. Thanks, KOA! PS: Keep in mind, this area is 'Merica friendly...In other words, treat people right and you'll be treated right. Do not play games with the locals, the black hills are vast. Just sayin.

This campground is awesome for everyone. We have been coming here for 5 years now at least one time year usually in August. We have 4 kids from age 5 to 15 and they all love it here. It has 2 pools playgrounds volleyball horseback riding utv rentals bike rentals restaurants ice cream shop small store for groceries and camping stuff wine shop and the kids love to play with all the other kids there. We don't have a camper so we stay in the cabins and they work great for the 6 of us. They have multiple bathrooms and shower house throughout the grounds to use and a laundry mat there. We never had any problems staying here and will keep coming back every year. There is a lot of things to do within an hour drive also. I would definitely recommend this place for people with kids of all ages.
