(January 2, 2023) As the calendar turns past New Year’s Day and the holiday season is in our rear-view mirrors, now is the time to hunker down and get back to work, work, work. Right? Wrong!
Like most people, our New Year’s tradition includes a time of reflection on evaluating the past and setting goals for the future. These goals can focus on our career, family relationships, or our physical and mental health.
According to the Kampgrounds of America most recent monthly report, 87% of campers say that camping will be a part of their New Year’s resolutions. Whether it’s camping more often (41%), taking extended trips using a combination of accommodations (29%), or simply getting outside more often (28%), this coming year is shaping up to include plenty of time in the outdoors. Nearly 6-in-10 millennials are planning to spend even more time in the outdoors in 2023.
Additionally, the top factors that have historically driven camping behavior include time to just relax and not have to be somewhere, escaping everyday stress, and blowing off steam. When compared to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels, all of these factors have increased significantly. The biggest change has been around letting loose and blowing off steam. Only 57% of campers reported doing this prior to the pandemic, and now 73% agree it’s one of the main reasons they camp. Relaxing is also up from 76% to 85% and escaping stress is up from 75% to 86%. Camping certainly helped manage stress levels through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mark Lemoine, owner of the Coloma/St. Joseph KOA Holiday, says, “As people head back into a more structured work schedule, they shouldn’t feel bad if they also take a few moments to plan their next outdoor adventure.” He added, “Over the years, I have personally found the planning process to be just as cathartic as the outdoor experience itself.”
Lemoine reassures guests that although they are closed during the winter months, the team is preparing for the upcoming season which starts on Friday, April 14, and they will be ready to help people fulfil those resolutions. Reservations can be made online at www.stjosephkoa.com and the local office reopens this week to start answering and returning phone calls.
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
