If the weather is driving you indoors, use it as an opportunity to learn something. There are fun museums near Chincoteague that will appeal to kids and adults alike. 

Stop by the NASA Wallops Visitors Center and learn about the role that the region played in space exploration and the future of NASA. 

Head just over the border to Maryland and explore the Delmarva Discovery Center. It's a great place to bring children because many of the exhibits are interactive. Don't miss the otters! 

Visit the Museum of Chincoteague Island and learn about everything from the island's first people to the history of the seafood industry. You can also see the famous Misty up close and tour a famous decoy carvers shop. 

Check out the Captain Timothy Hill House, the oldest home on Chincoteague and a rare example of early American architecture. 

Indoor Fun

Nothing is cozier on a rainy day than a bucket of popcorn and a movie. Stop by the Island Theater for a matinee and forget about the rain for a while. 

Get competitive and bowl a few frames at Libertino Lanes or head to the Chincoteague Pony Center and learn more about the island's most famous residents. 

Find a cozy spot in the Chincoteague Island Library and hunker down or load up on books and movies for a day in. 

Stop by Black Narrows Brewing for a pint. Some locally made brews are sure to brighten your day. They have board games in the tasting room so you can while away the rainy hours with good friends and great beer. 


Nothing cures the rainy day blues quite like a little bit of retail therapy. Both Maddox Boulevard and Main Street are lined with shops. For a walkable shopping experience, grab your umbrella and head to Main Street.
