“We’re delighted to have a Chincoteague Island KOA,” said Evelyn Shotwell, Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce executive director.
“We are excited about seeing lots of activity over here this summer and lots of children and families having a good time — that’s what this place is all about,” Shotwell said.
Formerly Maddox Family Campground, the new Chincoteague Island KOA has undergone a $5 million renovation aimed at providing campers with a premium camping experience. But the updates aren’t done, a $5 million water park is slated to open on the property next year, according to developer Todd Burbage of Bluewater Development Corporation.
“We couldn’t be here today without all the hard work and all the great things that everyone has done for us — everybody put in long hours and we really appreciate it,” said Burbage. “If you camp here, you’re going to see a big change.”
Connie Davis, general manager, called the campground staff “fantastic,” and said, “We’re ready to welcome the families.”
Located on 200 acres near Assateague channel, Chincoteague Island KOA has more than 400 campsites. Featuring new premium pull-through RV sites and waterfront camping, this KOA has room for all types of campers. In addition to RV and tent site improvements, the campground also added 10 air conditioned Deluxe Cabins. Four of the new cabins are pet-friendly, one is hypoallergenic and one is accessible. Deluxe Cabins sleep up to seven and are fully equipped, including plates and silverware, and with cable television.
Camper and tent sites are equally inviting with fire rings and picnic tables, and a new kayak launch is under construction. Waterfront camping areas are a good spot to view rocket launches from nearby Wallops Island, said tour guide Will Moore, camp host and security director. They also make ideal spots for viewing wildlife, he says, including turtles and owls.
Other innovation highlights include a food truck that will cater events and be open on weekends and a trolley that will ferry campers to other parts of town. Three new bathhouses with laundry facilities are also welcome updates for guests. Additional amenities include a pool, a new camp store and office, golf-cart rentals for on-site use, a new “bouncy pad” for the kids, a dog park and propane tank fill-ups for campers.
Located at 6742 Maddox Boulevard, the Chincoteague Island KOA is one of 500 open-to-the-public KOA campgrounds in the Kampgrounds of America system in the U.S. and Canada.
The campground is open May 12 through October 31. For more information, please visit www.koa.com or phone 800-562-7730.
