Straddling the Santa Fe Trail, this High Plains campground lies just minutes from Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site.
Straddling the Santa Fe Trail , this High Plains campground lies just minutes from Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site . Costumed interpreters welcome you to the reconstructed adobe-walled trading post, once a gathering place for adventurers, explorers and Arapaho warriors. In La Junta, the Koshare Indian Museum houses one of the world's most varied collections of Native American art and artifacts, as well as hosting Indian dances many summer evenings. A half hour south, Picketwire Canyon features the largest known trackway of dinosaur footprints in North America. It's located just 30 minutes from John Martin Reservoir , which has great fishing. Back at KOA, pick up some La Junta souvenirs and Christmas collectibles from around the world at the campground store. Cool off in the swimming pool and relax in the rec room, where you can read, watch TV or play pool, cards and games.

The campground business is a combined family effort, according to the Phillips family, owners of the La Junta KOA in colorful Colorado.
Edward and his wife Penny, along with their daughter, Corrine, and son-in-law Tim, felt it was time for a change in their lifestyles. So they purchased this year round beauty sitting on the front door step to the Rocky Mountains.
"We wanted to purchase this campground to help us be closer to our grandchildren and families" says Ed, "the opportunity presented itself and we didn't hesitate, family is important to us."
Camper satisfaction is the number one priority in the campground and you will know it after meeting a friendly and helpful staff member who works hard to provide a "home environment."
"The campground is not just our business, it's our home too. We strive to welcome everyone into our home as our guest." Says Penny. "We enjoy meeting and greeting the campers to find out their interesting backgrounds and places they have traveled." Be sure and check out the Christmas store, open year round with goodies and presents for the entire family.
In the little additional time they have, these two families typically will be enjoying the great outdoors fishing, camping or showing their classic cars.

Bents Old Fort National Historic Site
Bents Old Fort National Historic Site is a reconstructed frontier trading post. It was originally built in 1833-1834 on the Santa Fe Trail. The fort host re-enactments and has daily tours. A must see when visiting La Junta. See their web site to view the photo gallery.
Otero County Museum
The museum has an extensive collection of exhibits, pictures and artifacts. Both educational and informative it is enjoyable to visit. Take a step back in time, admission is free, the museum operates on donations. See photo gallery.

September: Hispanic Heritage Celebration
The rich and colorful history of Mexico's frontier comes alive with period adobe work, music and dance, trading, cooking, storytelling, livestock use demonstrations and other special programs and exhibits.
October: Fur Trade Encampment
The park’s main living history event again takes place in the fall, and this year celebrates the traders, trappers and tribes fur trading at Bent's Fort. Their camps, set up near the fort, will be open for touring. All together over 50 living history volunteers bring the post back to life during this major event! December: Holiday Celebration
Witness for yourself the joys, pleasures and pastimes of the 1840s at an isolated trading post. The spirit of the season comes alive with wagon rides, games, toy making and other holiday festivities. The event begins Friday evening December 5 with candlelight tours of the fort and continues all through Saturday, December 6 culminating with another evening of candlelight tours.
