Gothenburg is a great area for fishing. There are many places to fish, just ask the staff for a Nebraska fishing guide. You will need a fishing license to fish, but don't worry because they can be purchased in the KOA store along with night-crawlers.

Central Nebraska has many shopping areas of both the usual and the unusual kind. There are malls in both North Platte (25-30 minutes) and Kearney (50-60 minutes). There are also some more unusual shopping opportunities:

Ten Thousand Villages: Located in Kearney, this store has intriguing creations that are hand-crafted by skilled artisans from 30 countries. Purchases made help craftspeople provide food and education for their families.

Cookbooks by Morris Press: Located in Kearney this store features cookbooks from all 50 states. They are one of the nation's largest publishers of cookbooks.

Cabela's: Located in Kearney this retail showroom houses a wide variety of outdoors equipment. In addition there are also lifelike displays of trophy animals and fresh-water aquariums showing the area's fish.

Fort Cody Trading Post: In North Platte, Fort Cody sells western souvenirs. The Trading Post also features the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in Miniature.

There are several lakes in the Gothenburg area to take your boat out on. Jeffery Lake is the closest lake. Also in the area are Johnson Lake, and Lake Maloney. Park passes needed to access these lakes are sold in the KOA store.

Other things to do

Gothenburg, the Pony Express Capital of Nebraska, has many more things to offer:

The Pony Express Station: There are two pony express stations. The Midway station is located south of the town and is still on the original site. The Sam Machette station is located in the town. Both museums display memorabilia from Pony Express days.

The Sod House Museum: This museum is a reflection upon pioneer life in the area. Inside the museum are pictures of families that lived throughout the area. At the back of the museum are several barb wire sculptures and a reconstructed sod house.

The Lakeside Fun Center provides both bowling and mini golf. There is also a snack bar inside the building.

The Sun Theater is Gothenburg's community run theater. The theater shows movies every weekend at 7:30pm. Ask in the store to find out what movies are playing.
