Do Not Transport Firewood
A single piece of firewood can destroy millions of trees. It might seem difficult to imagine, but something as simple as bringing your own firewood when you travel to or from your favourite campsite could threaten and destroy thousands, even millions, of trees. Transportation of firewood is a common way for invasive species to spread as they remain hidden under the bark where you can't see them. Campers who bring firewood from home may accidentally spread pests that threaten Ontario campgrounds and the health of our forests. Leave your firewood at home. Throwing a few pieces of firewood into the trunk of the car before a camping trip might seem like a good way to plan ahead, but those logs could destroy a forest. The Asian long-horned beetle and Emerald ash borer are of particular concern. They are both recent arrivals to Canada and have no natural controls here. To prevent the spread of these pests, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued Federal Ministerial Orders that prohibit the movement of specific materials, including firewood and any material made from ash trees, from specific areas of Ontario, Quebec and the United States. To find out if your area is regulated please visit the CFIA web site. Did you know? • Transportation of firewood is a common way for invasive species to spread. • The emerald ash borer, on its own, does not move very far. Hidden in the bark of trees, this tiny “hitchhiker” has traveled with many an unsuspecting camper and as a result has killed millions of ash trees across Canada. • You could face penalties of up to $50,000 and/or prosecution if you move firewood out of an area regulated for a quarantine pest without prior approval from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Meet Your Hosts
"Finally, nice weather!! After a dreary April we are hopeful that May will make up for the late start to the season. We officially opened on April 25th and are looking forward to seeing you soon. There are lots of exciting events this year that you won't want to miss."
We are dedicated to providing a fun and entertaining experience for your family. It was Daniel's life long dream to own a campground, and in 2006, we had the opportunity to purchase the Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA and have loved every minute since. By placing a strong focus on recreation and service, we work hard to create a fun-filled family destination for the eastern Ontario region. We love our guests! We like to go out of our way to meet our camper's needs and concerns. Dan pays particular attention to new RV owners by helping with their set-up and understanding of their new purchase. He is also our resident chef and can be found cooking at the Chip Wagon every weekend and hosting our long weekend BBQ, potlucks and holiday dinners. Karen is always ready to greet you with a smile in the office and help with anything you need.
We are passionate about the KOA Care Camps Trust that supports special non-profit camps for children with cancer across North America. Throughout the season we incorporate activities and opportunities around the campground to raise money for this special cause.
Look for us on our evening tours of the campground! We look forward to meeting you!
- Daniel Parent and Karen McAndrew
