If you ever wondered what it was like for 19th-century pioneers heading west along the Oregon Trail, then a trip to Nebraska is an adventure not to be missed. Start your excursion at the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer in Grand Island or head to the Great Platte River Road Archway right near Kearney to learn the story of these early settlers.
The geography of Nebraska is made of expansive fields cut by the impressive Platte River. Plan a day on the water, swimming or tubing. In the spring, half a million sandhill cranes gather in the Platte, drawing avid bird watchers from around the world. History lovers will enjoy visiting the home of famed showman Buffalo Bill Cody. From exciting bike trails to summers filled with country fairs, your family will love vacationing in Nebraska.
Nebraska has many must-see natural attractions to explore, including:
Toadstool Geologic Park: This park is a perfect hiking spot, but you have likely never encountered its “surreal” terrain before — hikers describe it to be like a “moonscape.” You will understand what they mean as you follow trails past large rocks supported by thin dirt columns, odd-patterned canyons and many round, smooth stones.
In the early morning and evening hours, the sun bathes the cream-colored rocks in a peachy-pink light, giving the park an other-worldly glow.
Visitors share the park with geologists and paleontologists, who study Toadstool's sediment bands and search for fossils.
Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area: Lake McConaughy is Nebraska's largest reservoir, with nearly 35,000 acres of water and 100 miles of shoreline. The waters are clear, cool and deep — perfect for a summertime swim. They are also filled with plenty of local fish species — including white bass, northern pike, walleye and channel catfish — making it an ideal fishing location.
Niobrara National Scenic River: The Niobrara National Scenic River features one of Nebraska's most spectacular natural displays — Smith Falls. This waterfall is the tallest in the state at 70 feet. Take a short hike and cross a bridge over the river to get up close to the falls and stand right underneath the spring-fed water.
You can also rent a canoe from one of the area's many local outfitters to explore the rest of the river and enjoy a peaceful ride along the Niobrara's beautiful sandstone cliffs.
Cowboy Trail: The Cowboy Trail is the United State's longest rails-to-trails conversion project, tracing 192 miles of the abandoned Chicago and North Western Railway corridor. It offers hikers, bikers and other adventurers options for any activity level, from relaxing family excursions to challenging long-distance routes.
However you decide to enjoy the Cowboy Trail, be sure to slow down to take in stunning views of the valleys, rivers, woods and prairies along any of the trail's 221 bridges.
