This region has a climate consistent with continental to humid-continental climate. Summers are hot or very warm with higher humidity. The region experiences regular snowfall every winter with longer, cold temperatures. The snowfall is often very heavy due to the "lake effect" and increased moisture around the this Great Lakes area region. Late spring through fall is the best time to camp in the Upper Midwest Region. Camping in a cabin or RV at a KOA camprground in this region is a perfect way to explore the area, either in the warm summer months, or you will be comfortable during the cooler fringe camping seasons as well.

A large part of the Upper Midwest Region is made up of three of the Great Lakes and their surrounding coastlines. Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron border the states at the northern section of this region. These lakes offer numerous recreational opportunities and natural beauty to explore. Beaches and state parks dot the coastlines of the states surrounding these lakes. Two national parks are within this region. Isle Royale National Park is an island park within Lake Superior in Michigan state. Voyageurs National Park is located in northern Minnesota and is surrounded by four lakes. Voyageurs is comprised largely of water and shares some waterways with Canada. Known as "America's Dairyland," Wisconsin produces a lot of dairy products, especially cheese. Major cities in Wisconsin include Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay. Wisconsin Dells is known as the "Waterpark Capital of the World," and will not disappoint you with the quantity here.
Minnesota, "Land of 10,000 Lakes," has plenty of state parks and recreation areas. Most of the residents live in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area, also known as the Twin Cities. Michigan is made up of two peninsulas; the Lower Peninsula, and the Upper Peninsula. They are connected by the Mackinac Bridge where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. Michigan has the longest freshwater coastline of all the states and offers numerous state parks and ways to enjoy the lakes, including a lot of recreational boating. The largest metropolitan area in Michigan is Detroit. In Iowa, make a visit to the "Field of Dreams" movie site or the famous covered bridges that inspired "The Bridges of Madison County" movie. Maquoketa Caves, Backbone, and Ledges are a few of the Iowa State Parks to visit during your time in Iowa. The capital and largest city is Des Moines--make sure to visit the Iowa State Fair if you are here during the fair's run in August.
